The ‘99 per centers’
The Scotch badminton team showed single-minded determination in its quest for success.
WORDS: MR DANNY TAN (’04) – 1st badminton Coach

Thomas Alva Edison once remarked that ‘genius is one per cent inspiration and 99 per cent perspiration’. This is a mantra by which the Scotch College 1st Badminton team abides, driving us to persevere through our innumerable hours of training and preparation.

Since 2004, the cup awarded to the premiers of the APS Badminton championships has been engraved with two names: ‘Scotch College’ and ‘St Kevin’s College’.

We had lost only two matches in the last eight years. The stage was set: in 2011, the premiership would again come down to a duel between these two fierce rivals – five-time premiers Scotch and four-time premiers St Kevin’s.

Undoubtedly, this rivalry brings the best out of each of us. After winning the premiership for a record-breaking five consecutive years (from 2004 to 2008), the Scotch team has since finishing second in 2009 and 2010 – both times to St Kevin’s. With a much younger line-up this season, we were more determined than ever to go one better.

Although keenly aware of our proud history, the young shuttlers knew that taking inspiration from the past would not be enough. We had to work hard for the present – and the future.

Despite St Kevin’s fielding a formidable line-up – widely touted as the strongest ever, with all expectations centred on a premiership treble – the team refused to be discouraged. Rather, we drew on this adversity as a source of inspiration to drive us to exceed all expectations.

We commenced the season without conceding a rubber, with wins over Caulfield Grammar School, Xavier College and Brighton Grammar School. These early victories were pivotal in building confidence within our young team, and catapulted us into first position going into the summer break.

Encouraged by these results, we continued to train over the summer. This dedication and discipline were immediately evident when the season restarted, with the team notching up convincing wins over Melbourne Grammar School and Geelong Grammar School. These two successes turned heads – and murmurs of a potential upset began to swirl. Not allowing ourselves to be distracted, we remained solely focused on the challenges that lay ahead each week.

The season reached its climax in the second-last round with a mouth-watering clash between Scotch and St Kevin’s. Poised for battle, the team started well, with strong singles performances from Jeffrey Lee, Leslie Xian and Evan Li. These results – together with the singles victories delivered by Elton Lee and Jacky Yuan – helped the team reach a strong position following the eight singles matches. Buoyed by the prospect of regaining the premiership, the team went on an unrelenting assault in the doubles to win both. The final result was a famous victory – seven rubbers to five.

Although our most formidable adversary had been overcome, we maintained our focus and prepared to face a full-strength Haileybury. This single-mindedness led to a 10-2 victory over Haileybury, sealing our sixth premiership in the last eight years.

The team is coached by Mr Danny Tan (’04) and managed by Mr Peter Riley (Teacher-in-Charge of Badminton). Captain Alan Mai and Vice-Captain Maxi Merrillees served with distinction and led the team by example. The players – Brandon Cui, Dixon Duong, Elton Lee, Evan Li, Jeffrey Lee, Raymond Trisna, Leslie Xian, Tun Zen Yeo, Jacky Yuan, and Michael Zhan – are the first and foremost reasons for the victory. It was a wonderful team effort.

Preparation for the APS Badminton 2011/2012 championships campaign is well underway. It is hoped that the team will ‘rally to the call’ and be competitive once again. GS

Kevin。。。。。。

运动算特长,相比音乐人才难得啊

都说Scotch是培养绅士的学校,据说他们的音乐教室的音响是墨尔本数一数二的
