Share my two cent on this if make sense at all.
Currently there are very limited pure resource play managed fund in Australia (listed or unlisted). There are a handful of mainstream fund managers have them on their platforms. But there are only three open at the moment. (BT, ING/ANZ all closed their resource funds years ago). Colonial First State - Global Resource, GS JB Were Resources and Emerging Resource Company Share are the only three open I know about.
CFS-Global Resource is diversified globally and GS JB Were mainly in Australia (if I recall correctly 40-50 into BHP along given its index weight). Performance wise they all register very impressive returns but only in absolute terms not in relative terms). That means they underperform relevant index (I think CFS to a much less extent, GS JB Were was seriously under when I had a look at it earlier this year. not sure how it is performing now). Fee wise, both are expensive ( above 2% mark for retail options just top off my head). But this kind of play is much less centred around how much they charge the fee given the high risk high return nature.
It was a pity that there were not enough pure resource plays avialable in Aust (very very very different in US especially n ETF area). There are a couple more pure gold plays in australia but no pure energy fund here.
Whether it is right time to invest, that is a million dollar questions no one can answer (not just limited to this forum I think). My only view is that the fund doesn't have enough energy component in it as it should. I have seen a few stratgist projecting gold to be USD 1500 and oil to be USD120. But really no one knows how it will pan out. Sit tight and enjoy the rough ride then.
