PACKAGING giant Amcor will sell its Alphington paper mill within weeks, according to selling agent John Marasco.
The Colliers International agent said the 16.5ha site on the Yarra was offered for sale in an international campaign.
“We have had a number of high-profile local and international developers lining up to bid for the site,” Mr Marasco said.
“It could sell for as much as $200 million.”
He said developers’ confidence was buoyed by an improving economy and the change of Government, with Planning Minister Matthew Guy believed to support medium and high-density development in inner Melbourne.
Amcor announced two years ago it would sell the mill, but withdrew it from sale last year after failing to find a buyer.
Alphington Paper Mill Action Group president Peter Jacob said last week residents were tired of bad smells from the mill and so “the sooner it closed down the better”. But he said there was “a certain amount of anxiety and nervousness” about what would replace it.
A medium-density residential development was likely to house at least 1000 people, increasing traffic. |
