How to defer (taking a gap year)
If you plan to take a gap year and you wish to defer your course (i.e. guarantee your place for 2012 and protect yourself against a rise in ATAR cut-offs), you must submit an online form. This option is only available to applicants who completed an Australian year 12 qualification (or equivalent) in 2010. Please submit your application only once. You will be notified by email when your request for deferment has been granted or denied – if you do not receive this notification by Friday, 18 February 2011, please email us.
Other applicants (non-recent school leavers) can only apply for deferment if you can demonstrate that there has been an extreme and/or unpredictable change to your circumstances since you made your UAC application. Please use the Deferment Application Form (pdf) and not the online form, if you wish to make a deferment application. Submission details are on the form.
You can defer your course for 12 months (i.e. until first semester of 2012). See below for information about the government’s proposed changes to gap year/Youth Allowance.
How to take up your deferment in 2012?
You will need to submit a UAC application in order to secure your deferred place.
You will also need to rank the course for which you received your deferment as your first preference. If you do not put the course as first preference and you receive an offer into another course, your place in the course will lapse.
Once you have submitted a UAC application with your preferences, you will receive another offer into your deferred course in the Main Round and you will be required to attend in-person enrolment to secure that place.
If you are unclear on anything to do with deferment, call us on 1300 362 006.
Changes to gap year and Youth Allowance
The federal government has proposed changes to the eligibility criteria for Youth Allowance that may affect your deferment or gap year.
The University has not extended its deferment policy to accommodate these changes.
If you need to take a longer gap year and wish to keep a secured place in one of our courses, you must speak to the relevant faculty directly. They may extend your deferment/gap year application. This is assessed on a case-by-case basis.
Some extended deferments may be granted on the condition that you pass a proficiency test upon enrolment to ensure you still meet the entry standard (this is true in the case of some languages and music study at the Conservatorium, among others).
