Cars let loose in Melbourne's east
A group of vandals in Melbourne's east is sending vehicles crashing into power poles, fences and street signs by breaking into them and releasing hand brakes.
Police said 20 incidents had been reported to police over the past week, including a rampage over the weekend which led to nine cars being damaged.
The hooligans targeted cars which were parked on sloping streets in residential areas in the suburbs of Mount Waverley, Glen Waverley, Burwood, Mont Albert and Box Hill.
CCTV footage of two men to whom police want to speak over incidents involving cars being broken into and handbrakes released, causing damage to power poles, fences and street signs.
In one incident, a car collided with a power pole in Burwood, causing electrical disruptions to nearby homes and forcing emergency crews to replace the pole.
Investigators have been given security footage from a house in Andrew Street, Glen Waverley, which shows a car — possibly a 2002 or 2003 model silver Holden Astra — carrying four people to whom police would like to speak.
But police said the men were not satisfied with damaging the cars and other property.
Two of the suspects attempted to use credit cards allegedly stolen from one of the vehicles at a number of shops and supermarkets in the Monash area.
The attempted fraud was caught on CCTV cameras at a shop on June 1. Police said they would like to speak to the two men shown in the images.
Anyone who has had a car damaged in similar circumstances in the Monash area to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppers.com.au.
