New motor vehicle sales surged 8.4 per cent in April, the biggest monthly increase in nearly a decade.
Buoyed by the strongest recorded sales of four-wheel drives, new motor vehicle sales rose 28.7 per cent in the year to April, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) said on Monday.
The resources rich state of Western Australia led the charge, recording a 26.7 per cent jump in new vehicle sales in April to post a whopping 47 per cent annual increase in sales.
CommSec economist Savanth Sebastian said the 8.4 per cent overall rise was the biggest monthly increase since December 2000, when it rose 15.3 per cent.
"There are certainly signs that the car industry will remain quite strongly supported over the next few months," Mr Sebastian said.
He says the federal government's vehicle tax breaks for businesses are still flowing through the economy after being wound up in December.
"We're still seeing job security is a key factor that's driving passenger car sales and SUV sales are currently at record highs since the data was first introduced in 1994," he said.
"Going forward, the passenger car sales will really be the driver, especially over the second half of this year."
New motor vehicle sales in Australia rose 8.4 per cent in April, seasonally adjusted, to 90,935 units, from an upwardly revised 83,876 units in March, the ABS said.
Overall, the strong new car sales figures were being supported by firm job security and car affordability which was now at its best levels in four years, he said.
"But tax breaks are still playing a bit part in the data," Mr Sebastian said.
Meanwhile, investment in the WA resources sector was having a significant impact on vehicle purchases.
"It suggests that businesses are quietly confident that things are improving," he said.
Mr Sebastian said many of the vehicles purchased at the end of last year were now being delivered.
"A lot of those cars are actually coming into the country now and that's why you're seeing such a surge in the likes of WA.
"Not only have we seen quite strong sales in December, but it's still had a flow on effect that's working its way through in the subsequent months." |
