周三下午，塔州霍巴特高等法院一个由7名男士和5名女士组成的陪审团，在长达15个小时的审议之后，裁定”来自Kingston的22岁男子威廉姆斯（Daniel Joe Williams）去年6月25日谋杀26岁中国籍女留学生余璋罪名成立。
在五天的庭审之后，陪审团自周二上午便退庭开始考虑裁决。陪审团的讨论似乎曾一度陷入僵局。法官波特（David Porter）特允陪审团不必着急作出决定，从容考虑便可。周三下午约4时40分左右，陪审团主席宣布成员投票结果为10票“有罪”2票“无罪，按遵从多数原则裁定被告有罪。
当日，被告身着一件深色夹克衫和一件黄色的开领衬衫，在陪审团宣布其罪名成立时，被告双手紧握，但脸上没有任何表情。他的父母和几名亲友出席了整个庭审过程，聆听了每一个庭审细节。他们没有在判决后对媒体做任何评论。
被告将被监押至5月10日，届时法官波特（David Porter）将下达刑罚判决。本案的另一名被告帕帕多普罗斯（Stavros Papadopoulos）已经在3月份的审判中服罪，也将在5月10日被判刑。
威廉姆斯供称，去年6月25日他和帕帕多普罗斯在Sandy Bay披萨店让余璋搭便车，将她载到帕帕多普罗斯的家中。三人一起吸食了大麻。后帕帕多普罗斯突然操起砖头向坐在沙发上的余璋砸去，然后强暴了她，又扼住她的脖颈，最终将她溺死在浴缸里。整个过程长达两小时，最后余璋不堪折磨，只求一死以解脱。威廉姆斯称自己怕帕帕多普罗斯发狂连自己也杀，出于恐惧只好佯装也失去理智，用手抚摸余璋的下体，并协助擦除现场血迹和抛弃尸体。

Man found guilty of Chinese student's killing
After 11 hours of deliberation, the seven men and five women in the jury delivered their verdict in the Supreme Court in Hobart late Wednesday afternoon.
Daniel Joseph Williams, 22, of Kingston was expressionless when the majority verdict was handed down.
Justice David Porter remanded Williams in custody to be sentenced on May 10, the same day as his friend Stavros Papadopulous, who has admitted murdering Ms Yu at his New Town flat last June.
The Director of Public Prosecutions, Tim Ellis, asked Justice Porter for the men to be sentenced by the same judge.
Williams's parents, who have been in court since the start of the trial, refused to speak to waiting media.
Students relieved
The University of Tasmania's student union is relieved the two men will be sentenced next month.
The 26-year-old, also known as Tina, was studying accountancy at the University in Hobart when she was brutally murdered.
The President of the University's student union Clare Rutherford says Ms Yu's death shocked everyone.
"We have Tina's friends and family in our hearts and our thoughts and we really hope now that they can get some form of closure from the fact that the case is now over," she said. |
