I think you have a mis-understanding between Medicare Levy and Medicare Levy Surcharge. The 1.5% that you were referring to is Medicare Levy, which is only exempted under very limited circumstances. I.e. you have to pay the 1.5% Medicare Levy with or without Private Health Insurance cover. I think what you are trying to avoid is the 1% Medicare Levy Surcharge, which only kicks in if your taxable income is more than $73,000 for 2010 financial year if you are single ($146,000 for a couple's combined income). All you need to do then is to apply for a Private Health Insurance policy with the very basic Hospital Cover. My preferred Private Health Insurance providers are Medibank Private (they open on Saturdays) and NIB (they are cheaper). |
