A supermarket has lost part of its roof and more than 100 property owners have reported damage after torrential rain swept through towns west of Melbourne this afternoon.
State Emergency Service volunteers will work into the evening to secure properties at Bacchus Marsh and Melton following the severe storm.
The weather bureau said there were unconfirmed reports of 77 millimetres of rain at Bacchus Marsh, while Sunbury received 43 millimetres and Mount Macedon 28 millimetres.
The bureau issued a warning at 4pm for damaging wind, flash flooding and large hailstones in the North-East, North Central, Central and Alpine districts.
The warning also applies to parts of the Northern Country, Wimmera, East, West and South Gippsland and Western forecast districts.
Melburnians were earlier warned to brace for heavy rain, possible flooding, hail and strong winds but that warning was cancelled just after 5pm.
SES media spokesman Allan Briggs said the service received about 80 calls from Bacchus Marsh and 30 from Melton after storms hit the area about 2pm.
Mr Briggs said the rain lasted only a short time but was "very intense".
It is so far unknown how many properties were affected by the downpour but Mr Briggs said volunteers would be working into the evening to secure properties.
"We're still getting some calls as people arrive home and discover damage to their property," he said.
By 3pm, showers and thunderstorms crossing the ranges north of Melbourne resulted in 42 millimetres at Sunbury, 38 millimetres at Pine Creek and 40 millimetres at Parwan on the Werribee River.
Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Terry Ryan said warm temperatures and humidity had combined with an unstable atmosphere to produce the thunderstorms.
He said earlier that suburbs such as Craigieburn, Melton, St Albans and Sunbury would be hardest hit.
The State Emergency Service this afternoon urged people to take precautionary measures before the deluge, telling householders and businesses to secure any loose objects outside, avoid using phones during the storm, and to stay away from fallen power lines.
The SES also reminded motorists not to drive through flooded areas, while people were told to stay away from creeks and drains which could swell following heavy rain.
Mr Ryan said tomorrow's weather was expected to follow a similar pattern.
"We don't think there will be too many storms left over from tonight, but there will be thunderstorms developing again tomorrow from the late morning," he said.
"It will be another warmish day, going for 30 again, but with a bit more cloud about following another warm night. We're predicting the overnight low will be about 23."
Widespread lightning strikes are being monitored by the Country Fire Authority and the Department of Sustainability and Environment as the hot weather continues.
State Control Centre spokesman Peter Billing said areas known to have been hit by lightning were being monitored by aircraft.
"They’ll be working with the ground crews and fire tower observers already deployed to known lightning strike locations," he said.
More than 60 fires resulting from lightning strikes were reported across Victoria yesterday. |
