床垫厂着火, from Herald Sun
FIREFIGHTERS have contained a massive blaze that started in a Melbourne mattress factory, but are worried about the risk posed by poisonous smoke.
The fire engulfed six buildings and caused three to collapse on Keys Rd Moorabbin this morning.
Up to 90 firefighters have been battling the blaze since about 9am (AEST) and it is expected to take days to mop up.
The Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) is testing the smoke for toxins such as cyanide.
People in the area have been told to seal up their homes and offices, and avoid breathing the fumes.
MFB deputy chief fire officer Keith Adamson said because the fire had been contained, smoke would drop lower to the ground and create a higher health risk.
"We have got the situation contained now so it's not getting any worse, just now is the time it's a bit dangerous because the smoke doesn't go up in the air now, with the thermal updraft," he said.
"So just because a fire is under control is not the time to relax. The smoke has now dropped, so it's on the ground and people should stay out of it.
"We've got fire fighters in breathing apparatus sampling the smoke now to try and ascertain exactly what's in it." |
