JEWISH school Mount Scopus Memorial College has edged Victoria's selective-entry girls' high school from the top VCE spot, with 44 per cent of study scores at 40 or over.
MacRobertson Girls' High School has led the state for the past seven years, but this year dropped to third behind Mount Scopus and selective-entry government boys' school Melbourne High.
All three schools got a median study score of 38, but Melbourne High and MacRobertson High got fewer study scores at 40 or over - 40 and 39 per cent respectively.
Jewish schools performed strongly this year, with Beth Rivkah Ladies College and Bialik College joining Mount Scopus in the top-10 schools in the state.
Metropolitan private schools dominated the list of top-performing schools, according to data from the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority published in The Age today.
Other than Melbourne High and MacRobertson High, the only other government school in the top 20 was the Victorian College of the Arts, where 26 per cent of study scores were at 40 or above.
Independent girls' schools also did well, with Ruyton Girls' School, Camberwell Girls' Grammar School, and Presbyterian Ladies' College in the top 20.
VCE subjects are marked out of 50, with a study score of 30 being the average and a score of more than 40 considered an excellent result.
Mount Scopus principal Rabbi James Kennard was delighted with his school's results, saying the school had a strong work ethic.
''It's an opportunity to pay tribute to the wonderful work of our students and staff,'' Rabbi Kennard said.
''The Jewish community is fortunate to have a number of very fine schools. The love of learning and the desire to succeed perhaps plays a part in the success of students at Jewish schools.''
MacRobertson High principal Jane Garvey said she felt a sense of relief at the school's slip from first to third, describing the high ranking as an ''albatross around our neck''.
''Students feel they have a standard to maintain and it's a real problem for them - they feel they might be letting themselves down.
''I think they'll be disappointed, everyone likes to be first, but when they've got used to the idea they'll be pleased that Melbourne High has done so well.''
Ballarat Clarendon College was the only regional to make it into the top-20, with tiny Wycheproof Secondary College the top-performing rural government school, its results on par with Melbourne schools such as Xavier and Tintern Girls' Grammar School.
Wycheproof acting principal Ken Rumbold said the school, which had six students doing year 12 VCE and two doing the Victorian Certificate in Applied Learning, had the advantage of small class sizes but still relied on keen students. |
