United Energy tariff trial to power households for free from 10am-3pm until 2026

Free daytime power is being offered to 41,000 households across Melbourne to ease network demand during peak times.
The Australian-first trial would run until 2026 and be of most benefit to those without solar.
Electricity distributor United Energy created the Daytime Saver trial to test if time-based price incentives would encourage customers to shift their demand.

The trial is capped to allow up to 14,000 United Energy customers and 27,000 people on the CitiPower and Powercor networks to take advantage of the offer.
If those participating in the trial moved a third of their usage to the middle of the day, they would save at least $100 a year.
Eligible United Energy suburbs include Doncaster, Burwood, Glen Waverly, Chadstone, Brighton, Mount Waverley, Box Hill, Mulgrave, Dandenong and the Mornington Peninsula.
Citipower distributes electricity to Melbourne’s CBD and inner suburbs including Docklands, St Kilda, Collingwood and Fitzroy.
Powercor cover Melbourne’s outer western suburbs and regional Victoria including Ballarat, Bendigo, Geelong and Maryborough.
The electricity distributors have made the tariff trial available for all retailers to pass on to customers.

United Energy General Manager Regulation, Renate Vogt, said one of the biggest challenges associated with the transition to greater renewable energy generation was educating customers about the benefits of using more power in daylight hours when energy was abundant and lower cost, instead of during traditional evening peaks.
“This type of tariff is an important way of ensuring all customers have equal access to the benefits of renewables,” Ms Vogt said.
“Customers without rooftop solar are actually expected to be the ones this tariff trial could suit best.”
The new tariff encouraged customers to set timers or use major appliances between 10am and 3pm, when there was no network charge.
Appliances included pool pumps, heating or airconditioning, dishwashers and washing machines.
Electric vehicle owners without rooftop solar would save up to $132 a year when at least one third of the vehicle’s charging was shifted from between 3pm and 9pm to between 10am and 3pm.
The Electric Vehicle Council’s Head of Energy and Infrastructure, Ross De Rango, said the trial presented a “huge opportunity” for EV owners.
“Many EV owners have solar at home already and charge their cars during the day when they can, but not everyone can put solar on their roof as easily as they can buy an EV,” Mr De Rango said.
“Incentivising EV drivers to charge their cars in the middle of the day when there’s generally plenty of solar, or the middle of the night when there’s generally plenty of spare network capacity, is a pathway to improved network performance and reduced energy costs for everyone”.
More than 103,000 households across the United Energy network have a solar system installed on their properties. |
