EXCLUSIVE: THE shameful state of Victoria's taxi industry has been exposed in official documents detailing widespread rip-offs, attacks on passengers and even drug use and drinking among drivers.
About 50 complaints every week are being made to the Victorian Taxi Directorate, documents obtained exclusively by the Sunday Herald Sun under Freedom of Information laws reveal.
The files lift the lid on an epidemic of drivers in the city and country Victoria overcharging passengers and rorting credit cards and cabcharge payments.
The documents also show that one cab passenger is being sexually assaulted every fortnight.
Other serious incidents include taxi drivers working under the influence of drugs and alcohol, and attacking passengers and each other.
A World War II veteran cheated on Anzac Day, blind passengers turned away because they have guide dogs and drivers urinating into bottles in their cars are among the complaints.
The directorate is now promising a crackdown on drivers refusing to take short fares in response to the flood of complaints.
The Brumby Government has also vowed to get tough on drivers and operators after 69 per cent of taxis tested in Melbourne failed to meet basic tests.
Transport Minister Lynne Kosky last night threatened drivers with fines of up to $1402 and loss of accreditations unless they cleaned up their act.
