Water price hike for Melbourne
Water bills in Melbourne will rise by up to 64 per cent over the next four years.
The Essential Services Commission has approved the increase, so water retailers can pay for major projects.
The change means the typical annual household water bill will rise by an average of $331 by 2013.
The commission's chairman, Dr Ron Ben-David says the water regulator is trying to keep prices fair.
"The best the commission can do is to keep prices as low as possible. That's how we ensure that customers are only paying what they need to, when they need to and we think that's the best we can do to keep prices fair and reasonable," he said.
The Victorian opposition's urban water spokeswoman, Louise Asher says Melburnians are paying for the government's failed water policies.
"The prices are going up considerably, we don't have any water, and water restrictions will remain in place until at least 2013, so Victorians are going to pay through the nose through the government's inaction, and still have no water," she said.
Cath Smith from the Victorian Council of Social Service is worried low-income earners will struggle with the increase.
"Even though the concession is keeping pace with the water price increase, bills will still be going up significantly," she said.
"For people who are already living on $200 to $300 a week and are already rationing their water and energy use, there will be more hardship issues facing water customers
