Red Dog: True Blue is a purebred descendant of its smash hit 2011 predecessor: an engaging family film that keeps a tight leash on over-sentimentality and the cinematic desire to turn animals into people. The leading man, real name Phoenix, behaves like a dog. He runs, barks and farts, with only a few stray detours into vaudeville. He’s not the finest canine actor I’ve seen, but he’s realistic, and he’s new to the job, after all.
His predecessor, Koko, was the star of Red Dog, loosely based on the novel by Louis de Bernieres (famous for Captain Correlli’s Mandolin). The British writer had heard stories about a remarkable cattle dog-kelpie cross while he was travelling in Western Australia.
