Website to track plane noise unveiled
Steve Creedy | December 12, 2008
INTERNET users can now track aircraft landings and take-offs at major airports, and see how noisy planes are. A new website hosted by Airservices Australia gives flight information on approaching and departing aircraft and plots their position on a map.
The WebTrak service is providing information from Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney, Coolangatta, Brisbane and Cairns airports.
It is the first national roll-out of a system used in a number of overseas airports, including London's Heathrow. It was designed by Melbourne-based specialists Lochard.
Information provided includes aircraft type, height, origin, destination and the noise levels as planes pass over monitoring stations.
The system uses a combination of radar and flight plans to monitor the movements of aircraft operating within 55km of an airport and at heights of up to 3000m.
It can be viewed in so-called "live" mode, which has a 40-minute delay, or users can access recorded flight and noise monitoring readings for the previous week.
Airservices plans to add more portable noise monitors and to upgrade 40 existing noise monitors in the eight locations.
These upgrades and the Webtrak system are expected to cost $20 million over five years.
Transport Minister Anthony Albanese said he expected the Webtrak release to be welcomed by communities near airports.
He said it was part of moves foreshadowed in last week's aviation green paper to balance community needs against the economic benefits generated by airports.
"Our airports are vital to the national economy and it is important that the communities around them have access to timely information about their operations," Mr Albanese said.
"We are using technology to make the operations at our major airports more transparent -- one of the themes of the Aviation Green Paper."
An Airservices spokesman said noise data currently provided on the website was a day old. This was because the noise recorders were read daily and the information transferred to the system.
However, next year's changes would allow the noise monitoring units to transmit data directly to the system.
"From the next upgrade, those things will be flicking the data to us in real time -- or just delay it by 40 minutes -- and you'll be able to get noise data for everything all the time," he said.
The spokesman said the 40-minute delay had been set in consultation with security experts and reflected security concerns.
"Obviously, it's probably not sensible nowadays to allow people to track aircraft in real time -- exactly where they are right now," he said.
Airservices was confident the system would be able to handle the expected internet traffic from interested parties.
"We've built it robustly enough to cope with the expected demand and for people to be able to log on simultaneously," the spokesman said.
