Credit Union Advantage
• CUs are not for profit, not for charity but for service. Without the traditional profit motive, CUs make decisions based on what's best for you, our valued member.
• When you join a CU, you become a member-owner. And, every member has the same voting rights to make sound decisions for the institution as a whole.
• Volunteers make up the Board of Directors while their salaries go back into the credit union in the form or lower loan rates, higher deposit rates and great new products. Paid staff takes care of day to day operations.
• You must be able to join a credit union. This membership criteria is defined by the credit union's charter while credit unions exist soley to serve their member-owners.
• Voting rights exist for each member. Therefore, members elect other members to head up their credit union.
• CUs do not have to pay federal income tax. These funds are returned to the credit union to increase deposit rates, decrease loan rates and for the betterment of the institution.
• Income that CUs generate throughout the year is returned to the credit union in the form of improved products and services, higher deposit rates and lower loan rates.
• CUs are financial cooperatives. Members pool their savings to provide low-cost loans and low-fee services to each other.
• Deposits are insured up to $100,000 by the National Credit Union Administration, which is the government's strongest insurance fund.
Banks
• Banks worry about their shareholders first. Decisions are based on what will give shareholders the most profit.
• Only those who purchases share of the bank own the business. A Board of Directors make all the decisions for the bank.
• The Board of Directors are paid a salary. Day to day operations are also performed by a paid staff.
• Anyone can join a bank. Banks server anyone from the general public.
• Only people who own stock can vote for the Board of Directors. Normal customers don't have a say in just about everyhting.
• Banks, like other for-profit businesses, must bank taxes to the federal government.
• Income generated at a bank is only returned to the stockholders in the form of higher dividends on their shares of stock.
• Banks are commercial businesses. They offer services for one reason - to make a profit.
• Deposits are federally insured up to $100,000 by the FDIC, a government agency.
