I often get asked questions about getting started in bees. So I thought I would give you some tips.
Before you start and get a hive I highly recommend doing a course because a colony of bees is a complex superorganism, which requires a regular amount of work to manage and a few skills in order to maintain a strong, healthy and productive hive, and the rules and regulations do change from time to time.
If you have not seen it I recommend you look up the Victorian Apiary Code of Practice. This code outlines simple things such as how many hives you are allowed on your block of land, and how close they can be to fences. Download a copy of the code here: http://www.dtpli.vic.gov.au/…/2…/Apiary-Code-of-Practice.pdf.
You may also not be aware that is a requirement to register as a beekeeper with the Department of Primary Industries. In Victoria you are required to be registered as a beekeeper even with just one hive, and this is easy to do online and is free if you keep less than 5 hives. To register online visit: https://dpi.payments.com.au/BEEKEEPER/NewRegistration.aspx
You may also need to check out any additional rules your local council may have. Councils are responsible for enforcing the Victorian Apiary Code of Practice and sometimes add a couple of extra things to the list. Visit your Council website for more information.
Lastly there is a new beekeeping biosecurity manual which affects hobby and commercial beekeepers, issued January 2016, you can find details here

Some good winter reading for you while you dream about that first warm day of spring
Happy Beekeeping
