Monday March 17, 07:13 PM Rudd urged on Tibet during China visitPrime Minister Kevin Rudd will raise the topic of human rights when he visits Beijing next month, faced with growing calls to take a tough line on China's crackdown against pro-independence activists in Tibet.
Australia has again called on China to show restraint in response to protests against Chinese rule, which have claimed as many as 80 lives in the Tibetan capital Lhasa.

The official death toll in China's state-run media remains at 10.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has contacted 14 Australians known to be in and around Lhasa, but all are safe.
Arrangements are being made for some to leave the area as the violence spreads.
Despite widespread concern about human rights abuses, Australian Olympic officials won't use the Beijing games as a protest vehicle.
The Australian Olympic Committee confirmed it would not support any boycott of the Beijing Games, saying it would only disadvantage athletes.
Mr Rudd, who will visit Beijing early next month, expects to discuss human rights when he meets Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao.
"In most of my discussions with Chinese leaders in the past we have dealt with human rights. I can't see that changing in the future," he told reporters.
"It is a normal part of our relationship with the Chinese, which is to say that on human rights questions we have differences with the government in Beijing.
"And when it comes to these most recent developments in Tibet, we have already made our position clearly known."
Foreign Minister Stephen Smith said Australian officials in Canberra and Beijing had been discussing the issue with their Chinese counterparts in recent days.
"And that discussion will continue," he told parliament.
A DFAT spokeswoman said senior officials in Canberra had called in China's charge d'affaires to express Australia's concerns.
"The Australian government believes that China's best interests are served by implementing policies which will foster an environment of greater respect and tolerance," Mr Smith said.
"We remain concerned about serious inadequacies in the protection of Tibetans' civil and political rights."
But he stressed that Australia remained committed to a one-China policy.Opposition Leader Brendan Nelson backed the need for a discussion about human rights with the Chinese leadership.
"This is a matter that Mr Rudd should be raising with the Chinese leadership when he visits China," Dr Nelson told reporters.
"What precisely he says and what advice I give him in that regard, I'll discuss with him privately."
Australian Greens leader Bob Brown accused Mr Rudd of being "effectively silent" on the Chinese crackdown.
He contrasted the Rudd government's response on China to that against Burma's military junta.
"I can't believe that this prime minster has been so effectively silent except for calling for restraint, whatever that is," Senator Brown said.
"When the Burmese crisis was on last year ... this prime minister called on the then (Howard) government for targeted sanctions against the Burmese regime and for coordinated worldwide condemnation of Burma.
"Now, we've got the same thing happening in Tibet and the prime minister, who's made such a feature of his understanding and relationship with China, is effectively saying nothing."
Both the government and the opposition supported a motion put by Senator Brown in the parliament insisting China upholds human rights in Tibet.
The motion called on the government to take strong and decisive action to insist human and political rights are observed by China.
"We are dealing here with a repressive, dictatorial communist regime in Beijing, it is a police state," Senator Brown said.

So he's gay; he's a public school graduate ( once again proves many private school's claim about "networking" are just hot air), he was a doctor, he was once in jail. Well, he's a respectable man from many perspectives, apart from his ridiculously biased view about China and its political system.
