Sir Walter Premium Lawn Turf is a creeping lawn that only creeps over the surface so it can be edged easily. Unlike other creeping grasses that can travel underground and are hard to keep out of the garden. Because it is a creeping grass it loves the summer but won't do as well in the winter. However, in most cases it will retain some winter colour. This will improve with age.
Sir Walter is extremely drought tolerant, grows well in the sun or dry lightly shaded areas, however, it grows better in the summer than the winter. Being a very drought resistant turf, Sir Walter will not like excessively damp conditions that are in a shaded environment.
Climate
Sir Walter Premium Lawn Turf is a warm seasons grass, it will stop growing during the Winter months and may lose some colour. This discolouring can be minimised if you use a protective colour coating, this will give the appearance of green through the Winter months as well as provide some frost protection. Please contact Lilydale Instant Lawn for further information.
Maintenance
Mowing Sir Walter is an easy task. The first mow can be undertaken as required. During the cooler months Sir Walter requires little mowing. During the warmer times, mowing may be necessary every two - three weeks. Sir Walter should be maintained at about 40mm to give a beautiful soft feel to the lawn. Never mow your Sir Walter under 40mm.
Watering
Once Sir Walter is established, it requires much less water than other varieties of turf. This is our most drought tolerant turf. Where Sir Walter is in a shady position, it should be kept longer at all times to allow more leaf growth to compensate for the lack of sunlight, and watered less frequently. In conditions where the soil is limited it may need more water. But generally a light water every fortnight would be adequate.
For the warmer months, we suggest that you use organic water saver when laying you turf, this is available from our farm or can be delivered with your turf order. Organic water saver is available in 30 litre bags which cover 10 square metres for $11.00 including G.S.T. We offer free delivery of our Organic Water Saver to selected Eastern suburbs.

Fertilising
Generally Sir Walter only needs to be fertilized in the Spring and Autumn. It is a good idea with the Autumn feed to fertilize in March and again in April. A maintenance feed during the Summer will keep it strong and healthy. Note: Fertilizer requirements vary depending upon the nutrient levels of your soil.
Lilydale Instant Lawn offer a 10kg bucket of Superior Lawn Food for $50.00. The Superior Lawn Food we offer is what we use when growing turf at our farm. The 10kg bucket will fertilize approximately 500 square meters of turf. You are welcome to purchase the Superior Lawn Food from our farm at 30 Bottings Lane, Yarra Glen - Melways Ref: 267 J4. Preparation and Care for Sir Walter
Soil Preparation
It is important to have a well worked friable base on which to install your turf. This can be achieved by rotary hoeing if the existing soil is suitable or by the addition of topsoil if there is little or no useable soil. Remove all stones and debris. Rake the entire area to ensure there is a smooth even surface, allowing about 25mm below paths and driveways for the thickness of the turf.
Turf Laying
It is important to note when laying your Sir Walter, to lay the turf flat with the edges butted up together but not overlapping or squashed into each other otherwise you will use more turf than necessary and it will also cause the turf to dry out quickly.
It is vital that once you lay your Sir Walter that you top dress it with sand (approximately 1m3 to 100 square meters). You may also roll your turf after top dressing to achieve maximum soil contact.
Watering
It is essential that watering of Sir Walter commences immediately upon installation. A thorough soaking of the turf is required. For larger installations, watering should commence as sections are completed. It is vital that the turf is kept moist until root growth is established. This can be checked after 7-10 days by lifting a small corner of the turf. Once root growth has commenced watering can begin to be spaced.
