It's different for everybody.
I don't usually tell people to go and sleep on a piece of timber,
1 because I feel it does have any give to compensate for normal curvature of human body
2 because I get stiff and sore sleeping on them, I have no history of back pain.
I think medium - firm mattress is good enough, but some people do feel they can only get relief by sleeping on timber beds so that's fine too.
So before you rush out and purchase a hard timber bed just try the roll on your current mattress first, because it's cheaper and more easily accessible. But remember changing the sleeping surface alone may not always solve the problem, especially if your pain is not aggravated by sleeping.
