Saturday, 22 May 2010 14:12
Three people are dead and an infant airlifted to hospital following a collision in Tarneit this morning.
It is believed a maroon Ford Festiva hatch travelling north on Tarneit Road, a tip- truck travelling west on Doherty's Road and a white Hilux utility travelling east on Doherty's Road collided around 11.30am.
Three of the five occupants of the Festiva died at the scene, including the 28-year-old male learner driver and two back seat passengers, a male and a female aged in their 70s.
A 6-8 week old boy was airlifted to the Royal Children’s Hospital in a critical condition while the fifth occupant and front seat passenger, a 28-year-old female, has been airlifted to The Alfred also in a critical condition.
It is believed the infant was restrained in a capsule in the back seat of the vehicle.
The truck driver and driver of the ute escaped injury.
Both men are assisting police at the scene.
Members from the Major Collision Investigation Unit are investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Motorists are advised to avoid the vicinity of Tarneit Road and Doherty's Road.
Police will prepare a report for the Coroner.
