Hi Chris,
We’re writing regarding your recent article, “Revealed: The top Sydney school caught in racism storm.”
We would like to express our concerns about this article. As current parents of James Ruse Agricultural High School, we feel that many statements in the article are not factual. Instead, they seem to be rumours with no solid evidence to support them.
For example, the article states, “physical violence while some parents had been frightened to volunteer at events and in the canteen.” Do you or Ms. Powell have solid evidence to support this statement? If not, it remains a rumour rather than a truth. In fact, many parents at James Ruse volunteer in the canteen and at various school events, as documented in P&C newsletters.
Another example from the article claims, “Powell did not name the ethnic background or language used by parents accused of excluding others but said she had previously been told that the school’s president had to be from the Chinese community.” This is an absolute rumour without solid evidence. Most parents, representing all ethnic groups at James Ruse, have never heard this statement. In fact, past P&C presidents have included individuals from Vietnamese and South Asian backgrounds. All P&C presidents are elected following the process approved by the P&C Federation.
Additionally, the article quotes, “Students have told me that their parents won’t let them go to their friends’ houses because they’re from a different community background.” This may be an isolated case involving a single parent. Such personal decisions should not be used as evidence to portray the entire James Ruse community as exclusive of any ethnic group. A community cannot be represented by the actions or beliefs of one individual.
In summary, we believe your article lacks factual support and solid evidence to justify the claims made in its title. This has had a negative impact on the James Ruse Agricultural High School community, affecting both parents and students. The community is very upset by the accusations, which appear to be based on rumours, and feel it is damaging to the school’s reputation.
We urge you to withdraw this article as soon as possible. We will monitor the resolution of this request and reserve the right to pursue further investigation with other government agencies, including potential legal action.
Best regards,
James Ruse Parents
