We went for a walk around Sydney Olympic park on the weekend. We found that after walking around the North End of the park – where the swamps are – we had bad metallic tastes in our mouths – after walking around there for about an hour or so. Both my wife and I had the same experience – it took many rinses to get the taste out of our mouths – it was a chemical/metallic taste.
My question is – is this area of Olympic park Toxic ie are there chemicals in the swamp that can cause this? Has anyone experienced the same?
I am talking about the area near the old bricks works and the spiral hill – near Wenthworth point end.

It was formerly an industrial site – abattoirs, a brickworks, a salt-works, blanket factory. Timbrol made timber preservatives from coal tar oil. Union Carbide: pesticides, DDT, paint, pigments, resins and phthalates. Dioxins were a byproduct and mostly dumped in the soil.
When the environmental act came into effect Union Carbide scraped off the worst of the topsoil. Most of the pollutants including heavy metals, dioxins and radioactive elements were dumped in Parramatta river and the wetlands.
The radioactive waste came from a Defence-related activity at Hunters Hill, but the waste was carried by the tide up the river past Homebush (as well as towards the main harbour). I've personally seen measurements made using an immersible geiger counter done at Meadowbank a few decades ago...
A lot of the waterside areas round the inner west were industrial in the past and have various forms of pollution – Balmain, Hunters Hill, Glebe, Five Dock, Putney as well as Rhodes-Homebush-Silverwater-Newington.
Basic approach has been containment in the sediments rather than disturb that stuff. AFAIK there isn't an issue unless you intend to eat what is caught in the water, or are drinking the water or getting significant skin contact with the sludge on a regular basis as a toddler might if left unsupervised.
I've got friends who lived in Wentworth Point for a couple of years and used to get headaches all the time, stomach issues, vertigo, not being able to sleep etc. They have since moved out of the area and the symptoms are gone.
There are a lot of articles online that tell us about the history of Sydney Olympic Park, Homebush Bay (now Wentworth Point) and Rhodes.

I think not a lot of people know about the extent of the toxicity of Homebush Bay and those 'mountains' all around Olympic Park that people play on. I read that they house millions of tonnes of toxic waste and large amounts of liquid seeps out and gets 'processed' in a waste facility on Hill Rd just hundreds of metres away.
Homebush Bay was renamed a few years ago to remove its association with the toxic waste and if you were to search the contaminated land register you cannot find anything under Wentworth Point since it hasn't updated its database. http://www.epa.nsw.gov.au/prclmapp/searchregister.aspx
Also just noticed on Google Maps, Homebush Bay has been labelled as Parramatta River.
There are plans to develop the northern end of Wentworth Point with new high rise apartment buildings and even a school. It's scary to think that maybe in 10 or 20 years time there will be a lot of people sick because of their long term exposure to the toxic waste. It will also be hard to prove the connection. Something to think about.
