最近读了Kevin Coombs 的自传书 A Fortunate Accident。真好。他是土著,因误伤致残。人非常阳光。
The book showed that racial discriminations existed in Australia. For example, when Kevin was young aborigine children were not allowed to learn their native language. This is sad since some aboriginal languages are lost. When 1960 Kevin travelled to Rome to attend first Paralympic Games, he had to use a British passport. At that time aborigines were not allowed to have Australian passports.
Kevin has won many award, including Order of Australia medal in 1983. For outstanding contribution to wheelchair sport, Kevin was awarded Sir Ludwig Guttmann perpetual trophy in 1988, A street was named after Kevin Coombs at Sydney Olympic Park in 2000.
Kevin showed how best to deal with discriminations. While Kevin was in Rome, he and his buddy WA team captain Billy Mather Brown went to a bar. Someone from South Africa yelled: "Are they opening bars for niggers now?" Kevin was the only black there. Billy wanted to teach that guy a lesson but Kevin stopped him. Later that person from South Africa realised his wrong and became a friend of Kevin. |
