AMEB highly irritatingly do not have an on line syllabus. Your teacher should have a copy for you to read though. If they haven't then that would be very unusual. Meanwhile can you get to a music shop as they all have a copy there. Look in yellow pages for your nearest one. Just ring first to make sure. No violinists inthis family so unable to comment on that specifically but people consider AMEB to be harder than the equivalent number abrsm grade. Their theory requirement for example is grade 3 as opposed to 5 in order to take higher practical grades. Their grade 3 is miles harder than abrsm gd 3 or 4. For the practical you need more pieces eg 5 at grade 4 for example but there is a massive list of options for each one as well as a set book that you can use if you want to. The technical requirements are different and a bit more difficult as well. The worst thing if you are used to abrsm is the marking. It is done by letter so ABC type the highest of which is an Aplus. All sections have to meet that standard to,get one though. Cant redeem poor sightreading or scales or aural with great pieces. They do comment on each section though in writing. They also quiz you about at lesst one of you pieces orally so you need to have the relevant gen knowledge learnt. Fine if you keep up to grade with theory and learn about the composer, key changes, form and any terms used.
It is not true that people here only take ameb though. There are several other options including abrsm in the big cities. And ameb has a piano for leisure exam system too which is very popular. Not sure if strings have that though. Less technical and aimed at those for whom piano is a hobby.
No - the grade numbers do not seem to match equally. Grade 6 ABRSM easier than Grade 6 AMEB. And an Aplus is much rarer than a distinction markwise as well - my impression but without much evidence to back it is that A is rather like a distinction and A+ more like 140 and over. The Bs are like a merit and the Cs the rest! At the higher levels - diploma and up - the repertoire starts to cross over though.
