What, no rugby? Old boys lament lost art

THE Great Hall itself was the only thing older than the 80 former Sydney Boys High students who gathered in it yesterday to reminisce about their school years.
Roy Clarke, 94, who left in 1933, recalled hoisting the gardener's mower up a flagpole.
John Hannan, 82, who left in 1945, said there were few pranks in his time. ''The war was on, so it was rather serious.''
Many of the old boys lashed out at the demise of rugby at a school where it ''meant so much'', as the school's centenary book recalled.
High was the first and only government school included in the GPS First XV competition in 1906 but withdrew indefinitely last year. Changing demographics at the selective school have made it harder to field a strong team.
Hugely one-sided games, such as a 112-0 loss to St Joseph's in 2008, had become a safety risk to players.
''It's very poor, a great pity,'' said Mr Clarke. ''You've got to keep up with tradition. The school has a long tradition. They were successful at times and not so good at times but they always had a team … They don't get the sporting fellows in because the sporting fellows aren't clever enough.''
Bryce Ross-Jones, 82, who participated in rugby, swimming and rowing, remembered the school as a breeding ground for many Wallaby teams.
''I would say [the selection process for students] is too narrow. I think you need to get in good students as well as average students and have a better mix, and then you get back into the sport because that's all part of schooling life.''
The headmaster, Dr Kim Jaggar, shared the old boys' disappointment but said the reunion demonstrated the ''longevity of our particular style of education'' and tradition of producing scholar-sportsmen.
''It's not all about the First XV, it's about every boy getting a game in every sport.''
