Permanent salaries/packages are easily comparable with contract rates. However, often you are comparing oranges with apples. The assumption "if you earn $60/hr than you must be earning about $125K per annum" is way too common. This is a dangerous mistake if you are new to contracting or even more dangerous if you talk to a headhunter who calculates it this way. In first instance it is dangerous because you more likely to accept lower rate and will be disappointed with the reality later on. In the second instance a headhunter may not consider you for a $90K + super permanent position, as it will be a "huge" drop of income for you (the drop is less than $2K see figures below). I am sure there are plenty of contractors out there who know exactly what I am talking about.
The following information should assist you with comparison whenever you require it. I used the numbers from my last permanent position agreement. It may be very different in your case, but all you need to do is change couple of digits and re-calculate the rest to tailor the numbers for your situation.
Number of hours worked per week (37.5) * 52 (number of weeks in a year) = 1950 hours
10 public holidays = 7.5 * 10 = 75 hours
4 weeks annual leave = 37.5*4 = 150 hours
8 days sick leave = 7.5 * 8 = 60 hours
Total hours off = 285 hours
1950 – 285 = 1665 working hours in a calendar year.
