if he was crying loudly initially, then i would pat him on my shoulder until he quiet down, then continued the patting in his cot. if he was just making little quiet cry, or whining sound from the start, then i would pat him with him in his cot right away. once i've put him in the cot, i tried to avoid picking him up again. I noticed that he sometimes cried louder and louder in the cot but then would suddenly stop. that's when he was a minute from falling asleep. if i have picked him up, then i would disturb him falling asleep and prolonged the process. i think it all comes to experience and learning to read your baby's sign. i can usually tell whether the baby is crying loudly because he is about to fall asleep or whether he was upset and needed me to pick him up to console up. If it was the latter, than i would pat him on my shoulder until he calmed down and started the process again.
On your second question, no, when I did it slowly like I described, by gradually decreasing the amount of patting, he no longer cried when I put him in the cot. sometimes he made little fussing sound but definitely not crying. If i leave him alone, he only needed to fuss for a few minutes and then he would be asleep. |
