LZ, if you earned 52k for the last financial year, you should be paying 1.5% medicare levy. I think every person in Australia who earns more than 30k something has to pay that. (This is different from medicare surcharge.) There is nothing you can do for last financial year.
There is not really a way to avoid paying the levy unless you reduce your yearly income to a level below the requirement to pay medicare levy, (you can check out this income level on ATO website). I guess the best way to reduce income is to consider buying an investment property.
For amendments of previous year's tax returns, I think you can write a letter to ATO, stating the
deduction you have overlooked and provide relevant evidence. ATO will look at your request and make adjustments if they agree with you. |
