Keep nose to the grindstone / nose to the grindstone:[Idiom] to continue to work very hard without stopping. 不停地工作。又如：I was keeping my nose to the grindstone during the whole exam period. 相信大家都有这样cram for exam的经历。

Have your back to the wall / back to the wall: [idiom] have very serious problems which limit the ways in which you can act. 没有回旋的余地。挺形象的，都贴到墙了，还往哪儿转那。

2．Weintraub has built an exclusive on-set poker lounge for the cast and crew of Ocean’s 13 so stars such as Clooney and Brad Pitt can live it up between takes in the Las Vegas-style gambling den in Los Angeles.

Live it up: [Slang] to engage in festive pleasures or extravagances. 纵情狂欢。

哎，这些好莱坞重量级人物(Hollywood heavyweights)真是过着奢华的生活啊。顺便说一句，这里的takes指的是制片时一段一段的录制。

3．Pitt, however, might not have the time to party with his pals – he’ll be too busy making pod-casts to stay in touch with his family.

Pod-casts: 这个词来源于Broadcasting （广播，播报）和iPOD。Podcasting技术可以使个人自制影音文件，并通过互联网自动传播。Pitt是好孩子。

4．While embarrassed at first, when date No.3 hit my table I took the plunge.

背景是Speed dating，一种类似于上海电视台“相约星期六”的速配活动，这句话里没有俚语，要提一下的是take the plunge: to begin an unfamiliar venture, especially after hesitating 冒险尝试，MX非常喜欢用这个短语。

5．There’s nothing worse than sitting with someone who is like getting blood from stone.

Get blood from stone: [Idiom] to do something very difficult. 钻石取血啊，是够难的。

6．Have an ace up your sleeve. Ask a slightly risqué question.

Have an ace up your sleeve: [Idiom] to have an advantage that other people do not know about. 这是给Speed dating的人出点子，可瞧这点子出的，这个所谓的别人不知道的优势，就是问一些带颜色的问题啊。比如: What do you prefer, true love or wild sex?

Work your arse/backside off: to work very hard. [Idiom] 辛苦工作。比如沉溺于游戏之中，可能就会出现这种情况：He’s indulged in playing online games and now he has to work his backside off to pass the mid-term exam.

2.…well that’s a no-brainer. So butt out.

Butt out: [Slang] to leave someone alone. 别理他了，随他去吧。

MX今天似乎很偏爱这个词，又出现一次：Smokers who spend more time fagging than working could be butted out of the workplace. 这里的意思是to leave, depart，被提出局啦。

MX花了2版讨论工作和吸烟的关系，有些与烟有关的常用词

Inhaler: 顾名思义，指吸烟吸进肺里的烟民。
Wafter: 这是相对于inhaler而言的，指将烟吐出来的烟民。主要就这两大类SMOKER。
Light up a cigarette 点燃香烟   Stub out a cigarette 熄灭烟蒂
Second hand smoking / passive smoking: 被动吸烟

我仍然要提一下那句”CLICHÉ”:吸烟有害健康，同志们，能戒则戒吧。

3.Funky Environmental Bags, $5, are sold at uni markets around Melbourne.

Funky: [Slang] Characterized by originality and modishness; unconventional 有新意的，时髦的，独树一帜的。 还有一个意思是Outlandishly vulgar or eccentric in a humorous or tongue-in-cheek manner; campy。这是一个非常常用的俚语，那些火车上头发染得五颜六色，穿着稀奇古怪的都可以称为FUNKY。

4.Booby: [Slang] A woman’s breast。常用复数(pl) boobies，哈哈，这个就不用我中文解释了。常用词，我在想，那个波霸中的波也是从此而来。

明天晚上要去参加妹妹的毕业典礼，换了班要早起，今天就简略点啦，大家包涵。

另外添两个MX以外的词。从小米的帖子里下载了很多头像，发了一个MC HAMMER的CARTOON图像给以前的鬼佬同事，他回了说 LOL, GROOVY!意为VERY PLEASING, WONDERFUL，很帅啊。可见GROOVY这个词还是很常用的。让我想起了一个形容女生的俚语FOXY，和SEXY同义，很性感。

Pull the plug on something: [Idiom] to do something which prevents an activity from continuing, especially to stop giving money. 停止做某事。其实很形象，把插销拔了，什么东西都蹦达不起来了。

2.Diva dumps on bad-boyfriend rumors.

Dump: [Slang] to criticize another severely 强烈谴责，多加on。

3.The musos will have to keep their playing fingers well clear of the guard dogs that protect the houses on their routes.

Muso: [Slang] a young musician, especially an annoying show-off one. 年轻乐师。常用于澳洲和英国。

4.Aussie blokes faithful

Bloke: [Slang] man, much like “dude”, “guy”. 小伙子。凡是提到小伙子，MX首选这个词，比如第3版出现的：The busty Baywatch babe and her bloke tied the knot in Detroit, Anderson said on her website. 两人结婚(tie the knot)就结呗，非要提一下这个Anderson是BUSTY(大胸)美女，可见MX有多八卦了。

5.The obese kitty was put on a crash diet.

Crash: Of or characterized by an intensive effort to produce or accomplish. 速成的，非正式用语。比如crash course，速成课程。 这只胖猫够惨的。

Wear your heart on your sleeve: [idiom] to make your feelings and opinions obvious to other people. 使你的感受、情绪或者观点对他人来说显而易见。特别是指坦然地表示你对某人的爱。把心装在袖管里，稍微抖抖就出来了，自然别人是很容易看见的。

2. Cabbie killed in carjack

如果知道cab是出租车，就会知道cabbie是出租车司机；如果知道hijack是劫持，就会知道carjack是劫车。常用hail a cab（拦出租车）。

-ie结尾的单词多口语化，听上去也很可爱。比如pinkie (小手指)，quickie [slang] (Something made or done rapidly 很快做成的东西或事)，cutie (小可爱)，brekkie [Slang] (早餐)等。

3．Locals bucked a trend which showed that nationally, the housing sector absorbed the rise without a blip, with new figures showing home financing up in June.

Buck: to oppose directly and stubbornly; go against. 反对。Buck a trend为反潮流。这里是说住房贷款在维多利亚省下降了3.1%，然而全国范围内基本都上升了，而且是without a blip。真是抢购房子啊，升了这么多息，居然没影响。这到底是表明经济强劲呢？还是RECESSION的一个预警？更多人将更多的钱用于归还住房贷款，在总收入不变的情况下，用于其它物品的消费必然下降，利息升高，投资下降，虽然对住房的投资并没有按预期的下降，但是入不敷出的时候会怎么样？C+G+I+NX，C,I按理都应该下降了，澳洲经济何去何从呢？

Blip: A temporary or insignificant phenomenon, especially a brief departure from the normal. 短暂的偏离现象。比如the day-to-day blip in the market.

Moggy: [Slang] an affection term for domestic cat. 猫的昵称。关于猫，Mischa又说道：”I have to grab the phone and tell them it’s my pussy.” Pussy也指猫。我黄色了一下，想起pussy还有一个意思，呵呵，这里就不提了。

5. Everyone agreed. Even ‘Mousy Jean”, the goody-goody who never spoke.

Goody-goody: [Slang] affectedly or smugly good or self-righteous. 伪善的道学先生。

这篇文章的题目是”Don’t our faults, our flaws, our pulled faces tell something significant about us?” 里面有很多对Make a face(做鬼脸)的描写，如下：
stick a pencil up his nose 把笔插在鼻孔里
poke her tongue out 舌头伸出来
going for the original cross-eyed, buck-toothed look 准备走传统的斗鸡眼，龇牙咧嘴的路线。这里的buck-toothed，就是将下嘴唇往里卷，上齿龇出来的样子
sport a magnificent pair of punter’s eyes 这个punter’s eyes是什么样子，不清楚，但是MX常常有报道punter（赌棍）的消息。
grin lipless in a ghoulish fashion 有种游戏里有个怪物叫ghoul，长得那个恶心啊，有点像僵尸，称为食尸鬼。

Nutty: [Slang] crazy, idiotic 疯狂的。它的名词nut: a crazy or eccentric person, 如Are you a nut? 你疯了吗？又一形容词nuts有相似的意义，如：This goof’s driving me nuts!

7. Spanish police nab arsonists as fires rage

nab: to seize (a fugitive or wrongdoer); arrest. 逮捕，口语化。National Australia Bank (NAB) ……唉。。。。
