The development of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine began in the 1990s and the first vaccine became available in 2006:
1985
Professor Ian Frazer, a researcher at the University of Queensland, established the world's first research group dedicated to developing an HPV vaccine
1991
Frazer and his colleague Dr. Jian Zhou filed a patent application for the technology to develop the vaccine
1995
Frazer and Zhou licensed the technology to CSL Limited, an Australian biotechnology company, which then sub-licensed it to Merck & Co.
2006
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Gardasil, the first HPV vaccine
2007
Australia became the first country to roll out a national HPV vaccination program
2013
Australia extended the program to include teenage boys
