234 【Little Women】It was no paler and but littler thinner than in the autumn, yet there was a strange, transparent look about it, as if the mortal was being slowly refined away, and the immortal shining through the frail flesh with an indescribably pathetic beauty. -- by Louisa May Alcottby

But if you refuse to agree with me, please do come over and spread your own touch. I believe the warmth on its surface will settle your mind and narrow your impression to the point of mine…

235 【Little Women】Whether they like it or not, they are virtually put upon the shelf as soon as the wedding excitement is over, and most of them might exclaim, as did a very pretty woman the other day, "I'm as handsome as ever, but no one takes any notice of me because I'm married." -- by Louisa May Alcottby

。。 He told me he was paid 70 yuan for one trip of carrying the pile wood uphill, and could only do it twice a day without making himself overly fatigued. Then, upon a strange motive, that might explain half an urge of my humanely compassion, and half the fun to be possibly derived from the queer experience, I proposed giving him 100 yuan for carrying me instead of the wood, of course on the same route. He surveyed me suspiciously from head to foot, hesitating and remained undecided for quite a while, before accepting my offer with a resolute nod of ‘ok’, in a manner very much like a smart business man closing a long-running negotiation. He then moved to the side, and started unloading the massive wooden piles onto the ground, while I was watching him with a feeling of shameful discomfort, which was helplessly increased with the moments as he prepared his new task. Nevertheless, as a smart person, I was confident enough to wash well down the negative feeling by a good logic of justification. For one, I considered the deal to be mutually beneficial. I was not only much lighter in weight and a great deal shorter in length than the pile wood, but considerably smarter as well. For that reason, at least, I knew how to tear myself off from his back and walk on my own feet if detecting the man was too tired and when he had a need for an urgent gasping rest. And, the cost of 100 yuan was by no means a trifle expense; if converted to $20, it could buy up to four cans of Australian beer that would amount to a significant level of alcoholic pleasure. Therefore, all things considered, I had made myself becoming quite carefree and light-hearted, until the time he was ready to do his job. But to my utmost exasperation, as soon as I climbed onto his back, he suddenly and forcibly flung my body off his back, like an untamed wild horse shaking a novice rider, throwing my unprepared body straight onto the pavement. My back and my right elbow hit hard to the concrete, so unbearably painful that I couldn’t even find a voice of crying. After his violent exertion, the man, of whose face now turned deadly crimson, left the scene, neither returning my money, nor did he utter a single word, as if his device was completely choked by his ecstasy of ferocity. Watching his back, I struggled to sit up on the ground with an exceeding mortification, still fearing he could just come back to kick me and spit over me even more. It was such a horrid experience to be recalled that I had to admit that this was my worst business deal I have ever conducted in my entire life.

242 【Patrick White Letters】It is very gratifying when somebody one hasn't seen for months, says spontaneously in the first few moments, 'Now what about money? if you find your are short, you must come to me at once.' - by Patrick White.

-- In a drizzling afternoon, in the rippling water in a little ditch in a garden close to my house, was a pair of ducks. They were floating on, listlessly, with their placid wings closed up undisturbed. I neared them, not in the same sneaking manner as I would approach a bird in the tree, and waved my passionate hands to arouse their attention, but they did not reply to me in any of their duck’s way. I then became impatient and somehow desperate for a special type of communication with the only living creatures around me, suddenly stooped down, as if I was going to pick a stone to hit them. My abrupt, threatening movement must have struck serverely the duck’s defensive nerve, for they started to flap their heavy wings, briskly and franticly upon the water for quite a few seconds, before lifting up the body successfully into the air. Not as high and light and swift, of course, as you would see from a bird’s flying, but I was more so amazed with their remarkable efforts, out of their clumsy and colourless bodies, that had produced such a beauty within the sight of my eyes ..

243 【Patrick White Letters】Any moment of complete happiness is impersonal, detached. It is something beyond the happiness of loving and being loved. It is something so distilled and colourless that its intensity is absorbing. I experience sometimes, but rarely, tonight alone, at the aerodrome, for instance. There are no longer any boundaries between the senses, the dimensions. The warmth passes through whether it is stones, or flesh. May this not be similiar to the state of death? Just an infinity of complete understanding and content.  - by Patrick White.

246 【Dark Peril】The familiar rain felt like a seductive stranger, teasing her senses, running between the valley of her breasts and down her belly to the junction between her legs. Strangely aroused by the sensation, Solange lifted her face to the rain, capturing a few drops in her mouth, allowing it to run down her throat to ease the ache. 。 -- Two French guys had a small restaurant in 朱家角, the popular Venice-styled ancient town located at the outskirt of Shanghai. A rumour was well circulated among the local residents and tourists that the French owner captured the snails from the watery banks at the front of their shop and prepared and marketed them for the renowned French-snail dish. The price of dish was very high, intolerable to most Chinese, but it had still lured large swarms of wealthy Chinese from all over the country, who couldn’t wait to have a taste of the luxurious and romantic French snails. However, one of the guests, who claimed to have been to France and tasted the genuine French snails over there, complained the colour and the taste were far less exquisite than what he had expected. He dared to challenge the French owner that the snails were not imported from France as such boasted, and heated up a dispute seriously enough getting the local authority involved. A court case was heard; a team of snail-specialised biologist were called upon to produce the evidence for a scientific justice. But surprisingly and amazingly, they found a full bucket of live snails still inside restaurant, which were exactly the same as the sampling ones they collected along the walls of the river banks at a rainy day. Therefore, unlike many of the court cases in China which often take years or even generations before its ending, the snail case was closed rather speedily, proving the obvious wrong of the French. It was, of course, an absolute mystery, to most Chinese who have heard this story, as why the French had not destroyed the evidence during the hearing process. It was such a strange and unreasonable human behaviour, utterly beyond their common understanding, that it was believed more than three generations of Chinese are required to get a glimpse of the way by which the two French had conducted their mental process in their handling of the lawsuit.
