儿童必读英文书籍大推荐（本帖的书都有阅读年龄标记）- 幼龄和小学部分

值得一提是Coraline这部同名动画电影，我女儿和我都非常非常的喜欢，是好莱坞动画片里面真正的精品，我和女儿这部电影已经看了不下十遍。要知道很少有同名小说拍成电影要比原小说还要成功的，Coraline就是其中之一，是好莱坞stop motion电影的顶峰作品。

我第一次看这个电影的时候，马上让我想起了宫崎骏的千与千寻，呵呵。。。

如果你没看过，强烈推荐，Neil Gaiman的东西老式皆宜，对成人同样是精品，你可以读出和你孩子不一样的东西来。

最后卡萝琳对父母的拯救我们也可以将之类比于《千与千寻》，一个有趣的细节是：《鬼妈妈》里的被困灵魂也忘记了自己的名字（当然还有一个突出的表征是纽扣做眼睛），这就象征着童真本性（人性）的迷失。卡萝琳父母代表的成人已经迷失在没有神秘感、没有敬畏、没有生活情趣乃至亲情淡漠的外部世界里（在《千与千寻》里则把外部世界描述成了物欲横流、毫无环保意识的肮脏处所，二者有异曲同工之妙），于是，卡萝琳承担起了拯救的重任，当然，最后她与千寻一样，找回了自己的名字（摆脱了纽扣眼睛），救回了父母家人——两部影片的结局也很类似，千寻的父母跟卡萝琳的父母一样被拯救而不自知，当然这也可以为故事涂抹上一层更加奇幻的超自然艺术色彩。
　　
总之，《鬼妈妈》展现了一个女孩变成女人的惊心动魄过程，而作为男性，这个故事提醒我的是：养一个青春期的女儿，要比养一个青春期的儿子更麻烦，但在关键时刻，女儿往往比儿子更管用。

Although I've never read the book Coraline, I'm sure it still gave you that tempting creepy feeling that also stand out in the movie. It's kind of like the books/movies are that weird and scary in a way, but you just wanna keep reading/watching them. Coraline （the movie） is a really fastastic movie, just by itself without the book at all, because it's kind of like the American Spirited Away. I really like the how the animations are done, and the characters are portrayed.

Coraline isn't really suitable for really small children, even though adults and teenagers may think it's overrated and aimed at younger audiences. It actually is spooky in its own way. Some of the language the the way it is filmed is actaully quite creepy. So I think Coraline, the great movie that it is, shouldn't actaully be aimed at such young audiences, probably ages 10 and 11 or above, who enjoy that creepy - i - am - being - watched - from - behind - my - back feeling.

THe book and movie of Flipped are both interesting and funny ones to watch and read. Most say that the movies will never be near as good as the books, and that is completely true. However, the movie 'Flipped' does quite a good job on covering every single detail of the book. Nearly every small detail is the same, and if you've watched the movie and read the book, you'll find a sense of satisfication. Although, maybe that's just me, since I watched the movie  first, so i was always referring back to the movie and thinking how it was exactly pictured like that.

The book is really interesting, not just an ordinary book, it somehow seems really fascinating and tempting to read. It's just overall funny and sort of ... playful in a way. Same with the movie, the movie as i said before does a great job of covered the book. I think that it really kind of represents the book, like no other movie really does.

It's a great small book that you can just flip open any weekend and finish in a day or two. Maybe then even watch the movie if you get the chance too.

作者是美国人Madeleine L'Engle。

故事大意是，主角Meg Murry与弟弟Charles Wallace Murry，是和母亲及另外两个弟弟住在一起，Meg难以适应学校生活因为少了父亲的扶持。她的父亲Mr.Murry是一位物理学家，一年多前参与政府的时光旅行实验，从此音讯全无。

有一天晚上来自另外一个世界的“怪人”拜访她家并留下有关Mr.Murry身在何方的讯息。为了拯救父亲，Meg、Charles Wallace及好友Calvin O'Keefe就此踏上穿越时空的危险之旅。他们三人得到了Mr。 Murry不寻常的邻居（Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who, Mrs. Which）的协助。他们很快发现置身于善恶倾扎的中心。邪恶的势力威胁摧毁自由与个人存在。一路上他们激发了他们从不知道自己拥有的力量、勇气与能力。

对Meg而言，这次旅行不只是冒险或帮助别人的任务；这也是改变她对自己及周遭的人看法的自己发现之旅。Meg深深领悟到对抗邪恶的最佳武器不是任何的力量而是爱。唯有爱才能发挥无与伦比的威力击溃黑暗力量。

Madeleine L'Engle起初难以找到任何出版商帮她出书，原因是出版业者难于界定她小说的市场-成人或孩童。一次又一次被退稿，这样的情形维持了两年，总算有业者同意发行她的小说。此书的发行后的大卖让出版业界跌破眼镜。

1963年美国图书馆协会颁给Madeleine L'Engle美国儿童书最高荣誉的Newbery Medal。后来这本书陆陆续续被翻译成15国语言。Madeleine L'Engle后来又写了一系列以Murry家为主的时光幻想丛书，包括A Wind in the Door(1973)，A Swiftly Tilting Planet(1978)，Many Waters(1986)及An Acceptable Time(1996)。。。但是还是以【A Wrinkle in Time】最为出名。

再介绍一部最近因为电影而大卖的作品，这本书在其1982年问世近30年间，默默无闻销量平平，但是随着大导演Steven Spielberg的同名电影大卖，这部书开始引人注目起来了。

【War Horse】by Michael Morpurgo

小说是从一匹名叫Joey的农场马展开视角，讲述了一个英国农场少年Albert Narracott在一战中的寻马之旅。一战爆发后，Albert的父亲为了维持农场经营，无奈之下把Joey卖做军马。战火纷飞，Joey被用来向前线运输军火物资，虽然躲过了重重危险，最终还是不幸落入德军之手。幸好得到一个法国小女孩Emilie与祖父的悉心照顾才倖免于难。冥冥之中，Joey回到了英军战壕，与小主人Albert短暂相聚，可惜好景不长，伙伴再次分离。而另一边，Emilie将不久于人世，临死前祖父答应她一定会为她找到心爱的战马Joey，不过最终Emilie的祖父了解到Albert对Joey付之生命的爱时，愿意以区区一便士把joey卖给Albert。

小说格调温馨感人，充满青春励志的元素，是一部优秀文学作品。
同样地，书很薄，一天两天就可以看完。

An imaginary book based in the olden days about time travel and different dimensions and planets. The book's main characters include Meg Murry, a stubborn mis understood child, Charles Wallace Murry, and later in the book they come upon a boy named  Calvin. This is really imaginative and interesting to read. It's sort of a fantasy as well as furturistic. (WIth all the time - travelling)

It's a fun read, short and great. It gives you a sense of action at times and mystery at others. It's a book with everything,
and I think that most people should enjoy reading it. Even though critics and newpapers give it 10/10, I don't think it's really necessary to call it my 'favourite book in the entire world', so I'll give it 8/10. It just felt like a normal time - travel or fantasy book that a child could pick up and read, but overall, it's great. Probably children 11 years or above would enjoy this book more than teenagers or adults.

【War Horse】by Michael Morpurgo

A book is either made famous by making it into an attracting movie or just generally attracts readers from all over the world. War Horse is a book that was just neglected and only ever sold a handful of copies. It was a book that was hidden at the very back of the book store, where only desperate parents trying to buy books for their children would look. If people had the time to read it, they would know that this book is actaully a great novel.

The plot is planned really well, and somehow it all relates and I think the author had a great way of showing how the horse "Joey" was taken through many owners throughout its life in the War. If you've seen both the book and the movie, you'll know that they are very alike. Most movies take out or completely change parts of the book, but War Horse follows almost everything that is said in the book in its order.

I really enjoyed reading this book, and again it is a very short and fun read. I rate it 9/10 and recommend it to children or adults above tha age of 11 or 12. I hope all of you who've seen the movie to read the book or read the book but haven't seen the movie to.

来介绍一本另类的读物【The Westing Game】,1978年Newberry金牌作品。

这是一本经营地很巧妙的推理小说。

近日住入Sunset Towers公寓的房客，意外在隔壁的亿万富翁Samuel Westing死后收到继承通知，尽管他们都不清楚自己和SamuelWesting的关系，这十六人(包含房客的未婚夫、门房)还是按照指令到了Westing老屋去听取遗嘱指示。却意外发现Westing先生在遗嘱中宣称他是遭到谋杀的，且他清楚知道凶手是谁，这群继承人要分成八组，每组两人，每组会获得一组线索和一万元，只要解开线索的谜底，答对的那组会得到两亿元的遗产。

乍看之下这好像不是给小孩看的小说，但是真的是儿童读物哈。
我女儿说一开始有些吓人，很多人名要记，有点无趣，但是情节很巧妙，结局很安全，是个安全的故事。

这部书的作者Ellen Ermingard Raskin是美国人，她多才多艺，是个作家、插画家和时尚设计师。。。前面介绍过的A Wrinkle in Time初版的书皮就是她设计的。她在儿童文学上成就同样很大有两本书成为了Newberry的得奖作品。很可惜他英年早逝，56岁就去世了（她是个大烟鬼）。

介绍本前一阵子女儿在看的书【The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants】，很girly，重点说的是Sisterhood & Friendship，男孩应该没兴趣看的，呵呵。
这是美国作家Ann Brashares于2001年出版的小说，New York Times Bestseller，美国和全世界大卖的作品，2005年被拍成了同名电影，也非常有名。

故事是从小一起长大的四个女孩子在在她们满15快16岁的夏天，她们第一次各奔东西度夏天，Lena要去希腊跟爷爷奶奶一起过暑假，Bridget要去参加一个足球夏令营，Carmen要去找离婚了的爸爸，而Tibby那里都没有去留在Washington DC。。。

她们在Carmen的衣柜里找到一条牛仔裤，她们四个人穿起来都很合身，因为她们四人的身高体型都不一样但是都能穿这条牛仔裤，所以她们觉得那牛仔裤是条Magic Pants。她们决定将裤子命名为Traveling Pants，并定下一些规则，这条裤子会在她们分开的时候，轮流传到她们手上。

当然这本书不是童话故事，所以这条裤子并不是真的有魔力。。。

女孩们给这条大家穿的裤子定下的规则，可以看看的，呵呵：
1、不许洗。
2、不许卷起裤腿。
3、不许说也不许想自己穿上会不会显胖。
4、不许让男孩脱掉你的裤子，当然，你可以在他的面前自己脱。
5、穿上裤子不许挖鼻屎。
6、重聚时，必须在牛仔裤上证明自己的印记。
7、整个夏天都要和姐妹们通信，不论你自己过得多么逍遥快活。
8、依照约定按时把牛仔裤传递到下一个姐妹手中。
9、不要把衬衫系在腰带里　(参照第2条)。
10、记住：牛仔裤等于爱，爱裤子，爱自己。

其中第4条看起来很有现代的女权意识，或者说是独立自主自强自立blahblah。。。:)
作者Ann Brashares对此评论说：“虽然这条有点下流，但却显示出这些女孩要掌控自己生活方方面面的想法，她们要决定自己的做为，不受任何人和任何事的控制。”

家长们不要担心，这个里面没有限制级的内容，很青春很健康，呵呵。
适合的开始阅读年龄：12岁以上。

第一本我也翻了翻，发现这书的每一个chapter前面都会有一段格言：
比如，Love is like war: easy to begin, hard to end.
再比如：Luck never gives; it only lends

特别地中间有个章节前面的一段写得特别有意思：
Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes.
That way, when you criticize them, you are a mile away from them, and you have their shoes.

Frieda Norris是一个受迫害的德籍犹太分析师，与希特勒同年出生，主要研究市场心理方面，有一本写她的传记《To Redeem One Person Is To Redeem The World: A Life of Frieda Fromm-Reichmann》，目前还没有中译版.她很有性格魅力。

再介绍一本比较新的青少年小说，2009年出版的【Along for the Ride】，是美国作家Sarah Dessen的作品。

故事内容和教育有关系，呵呵。

高中毕业的那年暑假，Auden到了离异父亲与他新任妻子的新家，一个靠近海边的城镇。由于她从小在一个父母亲经常争执的家庭，使得她比同年龄的女生还成熟稳重，她认为达成母亲对她的期望可以让他们多注意到她一点，因此将所有的心思都花在学业上。一直以来，她让自己成绩名列前矛，但是学业以外的人际关係却相当不在行。

来到这热情的小镇，原本打算见见父亲增进父女感情，但也认识了许多其他年纪相彷的女生Maggie等朋友。她们的活泼与Auden理性沉默的个性迥然不同，还因此认识了一个喜爱玩花式自行车的大男孩，更认识了一位个性与她相近的自行车好手Eli，两人不需多余的言语就能了解对方的想法，也许是两人都有一段遗憾的过往，相处时可以很自然毫无顾忌的互相陪伴。

短暂的夏天时光，彻彻底底地改变了十八年来一成不变的Auden，在这个热情的小镇里拥有了一个特别的单车回忆。

CommonSense上的推荐阅读年龄是13+，中学生读物。

这本书是美国人写的，里面Auden的家长在教育上的行为你们看看是否很眼熟。

Auden的父亲是作家，而母亲是教授，高知家庭。他们有很多传统正经的想法，从孩子的名字一直到其行为都必须符合其高级知识分子的要求，她父亲认为有个好名字才算是成功的第一步，当然Auden可不是这样想的。她母亲认为要努力读好书，不要去和比自己层次低的人交朋友。。。这样的培养把Auden弄成了温室里的花朵。。。

她按照父母的意愿成长着，她努力地让自己去迎合父母的喜好，去让他们喜欢自己注意自己，结果她发现她得到的只是失望，而父母的离异让她心灰意冷，直到来到了海边的小镇过了一个入大学前的夏天，才发现原来她以往错过的事情对她来说是那样的重要。

后面的确有限制级的东西，比如一个女孩跟一个电玩男在一起，后来怕怀孕，提心吊胆很长时间。还有Lena跟一个黑白混血xx。。。。。

前几天有看到论坛里在讨论莎士比亚，我想去年女儿读过的一本书，不记得是否在论坛上介绍过这本书 - 【Celtic Night: A Fifteen-Year-Old Girl's Modern Retelling of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream】。这不是啥有名的作品，是个业余小作家写的。

这本书作者是美国俄亥俄州的一名高中女学生Bridge O'Dwyer，她去爱尔兰待了一个学期后，改写了莎士比亚最著名的喜剧【仲夏夜之梦】，把原来的故事情节设定在现代爱尔兰的一个小镇里，写的是一位15岁的美国女孩离开纽约来到了爱尔兰的一个小镇和当地的一个家庭一起待了6个月，和爱尔兰本地人相处一开始很困难，但是她很快就融入了她的新学校，交到了新朋友。。。后来一天晚上，她和她的朋友们一起溜到了附近的森林里玩，遇到了树林里的精灵们，并和那些精灵们一起在魔法婚礼晚会上狂欢。。。后面的情节设定如果你看过仲夏夜之梦，那么一定不会陌生。。。

这本书是我LD的洋人同事推荐给我女儿看的，很轻松好玩的小品，有兴趣可以附带的看看莎士比亚的原著或者原著的改写本。

Today is national Drop Everything and Read (D.E.A.R) day and to celebrate the Essential Kids team took a trip down memory lane to bring you our favourite childhood books. Find some of your own and maybe a few that you forgot and get reading with your kids.

I have fond memories of making my way to the local library with my mother as a child. I would often borrow the same books every time no matter how hard my mother tried to convince me otherwise. Occasionally I would oblige and try something new but when it came to The Jolly Postman by Janet Ahlberg my mind was made up.

I loved that postman and the marvellous people he got to deliver letters to. All the mythical and magical characters from my favourite nursery rhymes and stories – it was like interviewing celebrities for a living.

I wonder if there is a computer record somewhere of all the books I borrowed on that worn out library card. I am sure I would find a dozen other books I have forgotten that I loved as a child.

Mine would be The Magic Faraway Tree by Enid Blyton.

I have had great pleasure in introducing my son to my favourite books from childhood, those which make up the Enchanted Wood and Magic Faraway collection by Enid Blyton. The idea of a hidden world located just over a ditch from home is extremely potent.  I loved that not all the lands on top the Faraway tree were lovely – some were scary and some horrid, like the The Land of Dame Slap and her school for naughty pixies!

It’s a shame these books have been re-issued for political correctness. Give me Dick, Bessie and Fanny any day.

I remember reading The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett and being completely transported to another world. Fascinated by her surroundings, her unaffectionate family, hearing the sad cries in the night from Colin and the mystery of the locked garden.

Even though I wasn’t a child when the movie came out in 1993, I certainly made sure I watched it. It didn’t disappoint and brought back all the memories of reading it as a child.

Eleanor had some trouble deciding on her favourite childhood book. I believe her exact words were, “How can you ask me to sum up my entire childhood in one book?” The more I listened to her list of favourites the more I understood what she meant.

So she put together her own comprehensive list of favourite books – most of which you can see in the photo gallery. But when I twisted her arm she did concede that The Chronicles of Narnia were pretty high up on her list.

My favourite childhood book is Possum Magic, by Mem Fox. My mum, my sister and I used to make food from the book - my favourite was Pavlova. This could also explain why I had a vegemite sandwich almost every day of my schooling life.

The librarian at my primary school made everyone in my Year 2 class learn and recite a book off by heart. I chose Possum Magic, and to this day I can still recite almost all of it word by word.

“Once upon a time but not very long ago, deep in the Australian bush, there lived 2 possums, their names were Hush and Grandma Poss ....”

Melanie:
I’ve always loved Australian fiction (I still do!) so Robin Klein’s books were always favourites. I especially enjoyed her young adult book Came Back to Show You I Could Fly. It has fairly mature themes – it follows a young boy as he befriends a drug-addicted, pregnant 20-year-old woman – but deals with them in a sensitive, thoughtful way. It’s actually a really sweet story.

I also couldn’t get enough of The Baby-sitters Club series. Luckily Ann M. Martin and her team of ghost writers kept bringing them out – there were eventually 213! The characters had so many wacky babysitting adventures, and had their little tiffs, but you always knew everything would turn out all right.
