The New South Wales Government has closed Bondi Beach after beachgoers exceeded the 500-people gathering limit.

The closure is temporary and the measure will extend to other beaches if social distancing advice is being flouted.

Earlier today, Victoria Police confirmed officers are conducting spot checks on people who have been directed to self-isolate at home due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The police say they are acting under the advice of the chief health officer.

Travellers have flocked home to Australia, arriving at airports across the country just hours before strict foreign travel bans come into effect.

The ban was enforced at 9:00pm AEDT on Friday. Now only Australian citizens, residents and immediate family members can enter the country.

It replaces earlier travel bans on foreigners coming from China, Iran, Italy and South Korea.

Leon Lycett arrived from Ireland, having cut short his holiday in Thailand and Vietnam to start his 12-month Australian stint before the ban came into effect.

"We're just on a working holiday visa," he said.j

“ We've had to book a hotel for two weeks and are not allowed to leave or stay with our friends."

Reza Omar arrived from Singapore to spend two months on holiday in Australia.

He said he would follow the rules to self-isolate.

"We'll make sure we are all on top of things when it comes to health and then travel within Australia, once we're all clear."

"Up until the day that we left, that was not an option," says Jay, "And with us having so much money invested into our honeymoon, we had no other choice but to board the ship."

The couple feared their itinerary might be curtailed, but they never expected that they'd end up stranded at sea, their ship scrambling for a place to dock.

Queensland becomes latest state to close borders amid COVID-19 pandemic


Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has announced the state will close its borders to limit the spread of coronavirus.

Anyone entering Queensland from the air or by road will be forced to isolate themselves for 14 days from Wednesday night.

The state is closing its borders in a bid to stop COVID-19 in its tracks after a jump of 60 more cases were confirmed on Monday.

Finer details of the border closure will be finalised and released on Tuesday.

Western Australia’s borders to close as virus cases jump again


The West Australian border will be closed in coming days and Rottnest Island may be turned into a COVID-19 quarantine zone, Premier Mark McGowan has announced.

Mr McGowan said entry to WA would be restricted via road, rail, air and sea from 1.30pm on Tuesday, with exemptions for essential services and trucking.

“These are extreme steps but these are extreme days,” he told reporters on Sunday, as 30 new cases were confirmed overnight, bringing the state’s total to 120.

Tasmania to enforce 'toughest border measures in the country' amid coronavirus pandemic

Tasmanian Premier Peter Gutwein says the state will introduce the "toughest border measures in the country" to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

From midnight on Friday, all "non-essential" travellers into the state will have to go into 14 days' quarantine, he said.

Mr Gutwein said "essential" travellers included people required to keep the state's health system and trade operational.

All others, including returning Tasmanians, will be required to go into quarantine.

澳洲的储水蛙，会挖洞，会作茧自缚的蛙：Burrowing Frogs

Burrowing frogs spend dry times lying in wait up to a metre deep under the soil. They can stay there for years until a good soaking of rain softens the ground enough for them to move to the surface to breed.

If it has been wet, then it has been a good year for burrowing frogs. Heavy rains can cover vast areas of inland Australia with temporary lakes. This creates ideal breeding conditions for burrowing frogs.

Around a third of Australian frog species will burrow into the ground for part of the year.

Some burrowers, such as the Eastern and Western Banjo Frogs dig a shallow burrow a few centimetres deep in leaf litter which merely serves as a night-time and cold weather retreat, not a permanent abode.

The true burrowing frogs are superb drought-dodgers, digging deep down into the soil and remaining there for months or even years as the soil bakes solid in the summer sun.

Many of these frogs can store up to 50% of their body weight as water in their bladders. This keeps them supplied with moisture during those months or years underground.

Burrowing frogs back legs are equipped with "shovels" which they use to dig themselves backwards down into the ground. Before they go to sleep, they form a cocoon of dead skin cells around their bodies to limit water loss.

Some of the better known burrowing frogs are:

Rare Giant Burrowing Frog (coastal New South Wales and Victoria)

Spencer's Burrowing Frog (arid central areas)

Did you know?

Some burrowing frogs live their entire life underground. The Round Frog and Turtle Frog from Western Australia live almost permanently below ground and feed on termites.

Tip

Sometimes an innocent excavation of the garden veggie patch can have surprising results. You may accidentally dig up a burrowing frog, deep in slumber. If so, it can be put back gently where it was and covered up again. It will wake of its own accord in the next big rains.

Ben Hardimon and his fiancee Channese Pintar were passengers on board the Ruby Princess, which departed Sydney in early March.

The cruise was a wedding gift for them from his grandmother, who also joined them on the cruise.

Their ship turned around on March 15 to return to Australia after the New Zealand Government announced it would close its borders.

On their arrival in Sydney on Thursday, March 19, Mr Hardiman expected a long wait at the port for border and health checks, given the concern around cruise vessels in the past.

But that never happened.

"It was just rush, rush, getting off," he told 7.30.

"Basically, from the moment we left the ship to where we were waiting for the shuttle bus was about only six or seven minutes. Didn't check passports or anything.

"Didn't ask if we had any fevers or any health checks or that. It was just straight on down."

Several hours after they disembarked the vessel, he and other passengers received an email advising them they now needed to self-isolate.

Forty-eight people who were onboard the Ruby Princess have since been confirmed to have coronavirus.

The ship is currently sitting off the coast between Sydney and Wollongong.
