Objective:
Architectural Coatings Product Development Team Leader/Senior Manager of 8~15 technical professional staff:
Emulsion polymer expert recognized internally and externally for architectural or other waterborne coatings applications
Drives architectural coatings polymer competency buildup in Asia Pacific and ensures know-how exchange and collaboration within the ED’s global coatings’ Center of Excellenve
Leads the Architectural Coatings Product Development Team and develops new products that offer best-in-class coating performance
Builds a network of centers of expertise inside and outside of BASF on emulsion polymer for architectural coating applications
Advises technical service on emulsion polymers for architectural coatings
Actively presents information on coatings raw materials and synergistic chemistries at trade organizations and conferences
Helps strengthen relationships to key customers via joint product development or customer seminars/workshops
Main Tasks:
As Architectural Coatings Product Development Team Leader/Senior Manager:
Leads the Architectural Coatings Product Development Team and develops new products that meet or exceed customer requirements and or offer best-in-class coating performance
Manages PhaseGate projects and cross-functional and cross-regional project teams to achieve deliverables/targets in a timely manner
Organizes and supervises roles, responsibilities and work routines within the team
Directs and provides required training for the work of one or more chemists or technicians and supervises visiting students or scientists on temporary assignments
Contributes and adheres to Safety and Environmental standards of the Corporation, Division and Site
Not an individual contributor, but be someone that helps others and the organization to be successful
Promotes know-how exchange and collaboration within the ED’s global coatings’ Center of Excellence
As Lead Scientist for Product Development & Production Support:
Develops new technologies and products for Architectural Coating (EDA) applications that offer BASF a leading edge over the competition, using BASF PhaseGate Innovation Process
Supports manufacturing problem solving and optimization
Collaborates with key customers to better understand unmet customer needs and identify product development opportunities
Analyzes assigned product development projects, usually complex in nature, to determine what must be done to solve the problems in question. Plan the methods necessary for their solution. Conduct necessary literature and patent searches and assess utility of information for projects
Writes comprehensive reports and evaluations on data obtained from experimentation and, if necessary, orally present observations, conclusions and recommendations to persons in areas of the company’s interests. Prepare original papers for presentation or publication if within security and policy restrictions
Cooperates with technical services/manufacturing in furnishing technical assistance to demonstrate the usefulness of Company products, and/or to solve field or other problems that might affect Company relations with customers or prospective customers
Correlates laboratory experience in the development of new materials, services and processes, and aids with progress during experimental production stages into full production and/or service
Stays current with developments in the areas of chemistry/engineering
Qualification and Experience
PhD in Polymer Chemistry or Materials Science or Chemical Engineering (preferably polymer related)
at least 5 years industrial experience in the area of emulsion polymers for architectural or other waterborne coatings applications
at least 12 years experience of conducting scientific experiments in chemical labs (including study period)
fluent English (reading, writing and presenting)
