Qualifications:

A demonstrated knowledge of system administration, Unix (Solaris, HP Unix, AIX etc) is essential. Working knowledge with data protection related hardware systems such as SCSI, RAID, tape drives and libraries and knowledge of databases such as (Oracle, Informix and DB2 etc) would be highly desired. Keeping your knowledge current will be critical to your on-going success.

Superior phone skills and ability to connect with the customer
Ability to multi-task across several open cases and effective time management skills
Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills
A calm and mature approach to dealing with difficult problems and people
Enthusiasm for technology
Ability to successfully adapt to change


Responsibilities:

As a Technical Support Engineer you will be part of a team that focuses on providing timely solutions to client technical problems. Based upon the assigned product(s) you will provide support directly to customers or to Symantec employees who work with external clients.


Your day to day duties will involve taking support calls directly from customers, taking accurate notes and trying to provide timely solutions. You may also need to research and reproduce customer problems in the lab to find these solutions. You may also be required to attend the customer’s site to resolve problems.

有个朋友两年前是65-70K, 当是他在symantec以有3 年。
个人感觉, support role 在大公司 薪水 一般比较低, telstra, ibm, cisco 都是。。。
当然 Google 除外。

This sounds like an external customer facing role - phone support, business manner etc, so it's not an internal operations job. So the pay should be a bit higher, as you get abused from time to time.

Veritas has a very good customer base already, and its market share is tremendous. Too bad it was acquired by Symantec. So far Symantec has destroyed almost all products/companies it bought, so I don't have any rosy predictions on the future of Veritas products. I did like it alot, may I add. Its arch enemy, CA, produced nothing but shit back then.

Internal support jobs never pay high, because you traded with job security. So it's important to decide upon what you or your family need most.

Totally agree with your assessment of symantec and veritas. What a pity... A great company acquired by a shitty larger company...

98% of Symantec shared holders said Yay to the deal while 97% of Veritas share holders said Yay as well. I guess these 97% only look at the promises made by Symantec, and never listened to any IT industry news in their lives. Good luck to them and their money then...
