Your employer might want to classify you as a contractor, not an employee. Obviously your boss doesn't want to give you benefit as an employee, and possibly get benefits for the business.
Annual leave, sick leave, super, workcover are benefits for employees. Your boss might pay to all the employee entitlement to you now, but actually you are not under the title of employee, so there might be problems later. Fingers cross.
In your case, as a contractor your income will be PSI (personal service income), under which you won't able to claim a lot of deductions as running a business. Suggest you to read tax pack for PSI.
It is not illegal for your boss to request ABN from you, but it is a bit fishy. Be careful with your contract, try to protect yourself as much as possible.
BTW, is your boss a Chinese?
