Homicide detectives have revealed that two boys found dead in a home in Victoria's north-east were most likely killed by a faulty gas heater.
Their mother, who remains ill in Melbourne's St Vincent's Hospital, was also affected by gas and had no involvement in their deaths, police said.
"Tests conducted today by an Energy Safe Victoria inspector have led police to believe that [the boys'] deaths were likely caused by a faulty appliance, possibly a heater," police said in a statement this afternoon.
"Further testing is still to be conducted as part of the investigation and police are also awaiting the outcome of toxicology reports."
The brothers, Tyler and Chase Robinson, were found dead in their home in Mooroopna, near Shepparton, on Sunday night. The boys, aged seven and nine, had no signs of injury.
Following their deaths, their mother, Vanessa Robinson, appeared to be disoriented at the local police station and was airlifted to Melbourne when her condition rapidly declined, police said
She was placed under hospital guard and has not been fit for further interview.
Detective Inspector Bernie Edwards told reporters this afternoon the family may have been exposed to gas "for a number of days".
"Every appliance in the house is going to be tested," he said.
"I don't want to go into specifics at this moment, we are fairly confident it's gas related."
The boys' mother had fallen ill from the same leak that killed her sons, Detective Inspector Edwards said.
"It's believed that because she's an adult it hasn't affected her as quickly as it has affected the two young boys," he said.
One appliance was believed to be responsible, but he would not say what it was.
Describing the deaths as a tragedy, Detective Inspector Edwards said the welfare of the boys' mother and their family was a priority.
“This is a tragic set of circumstances and the family has been offered counselling and support,” he said.
“Investigators have not yet been able to formally speak with the mother of the boys, however testing carried out at the Mooroopna property has ruled out any involvement by her in their deaths.
“It is normal practice in an investigation into an incident such as this that police would speak with the person who had custody of the children, or anyone located in the premises.
“The investigation is still ongoing at this stage and police will await the outcome of further testing to assist the Coroner in determining the exact cause of death.”
