Network Operations, Production The end result of our team's work is the delivery of Google's products and services to users around the world. We build and operate Google's production network, which connects the server farms in data centers to each other and to the Internet.
The role: Network Engineer, Google.com Operations
As a Network Engineer, Google.com Operations, you will be a key part of Google's life support system for ensuring the delivery of service to its users and revenue from its customers. You will be responsible for the smooth operation of Google's vast and complex global production network, ensuring it is always available and performing well, supporting both traffic between Google and end users and internal traffic related to our dynamic and rapidly growing application infrastructure. You will be at the event horizon of high severity network impacts, combining excellent troubleshooting, communication, and network management skills, to expedite problem resolution and act as a key point of contact between internal groups, vendors, and network peers. You will learn quickly and adapt to changes. You will maintain a high sense of urgency while staying cool under pressure. You will make skillful use of a complex and evolving array of both industry standard and Google proprietary technologies to ensure that Google's production network continues to be a reference standard for reliability and performance.
Responsibilities:
- Monitor network stability and performance - ensuring 24x7 operations and resolving service impacts as they occur.
- Support Google's internal application groups by troubleshooting service impacting issues involving the network.
- Act as an externally facing point of contact to facilitate handling of problem reports and maintain relations with network peers and vendors.
- Act as an internally facing point of contact to escalate technical issues and communicate network status.
- Oversee and execute planned network maintenance work, minimizing impact to Google services.
Requirements:
- BS/BA in a technical discipline and network certifications such as CCNA/JNCIA-CCIE/JNCIE (or equivalent work experience).
- 3+ years of experience with ISP network operations center tier 1-2 or enterprise/IT network infrastructure support.
- Excellent oral and written English-language communication skills (Foreign language fluency a plus).
- Working knowledge of TCP/IP fundamentals, network routing protocols (OSPF, IS-IS, BGP, MPLS) and physical infrastructure (optical a plus).
- Demonstrated ability to employ good troubleshooting skills and creative problem solving abilities under pressure.
- Experience with Unix/Linux administration, with scripting/coding a plus.
- Willingness to work weekend days and shifts outside of normal business hours (typically 4-day weeks, with no off-shift pager duty).
