Gonzalo Ángel Quintilio Lira López (born February 29, 1968), also known by the pseudonym Coach Red Pill[2], is an American novelist, film director and YouTuber who lives in Ukraine. It has been reported by the international press that his family and friends lost contact with Lira on 15 April 2022 during the Russian invasion of Ukraine [3][4][5][6][7][8][9] That has been also confirmed by the Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs which started searching for the missing journalist.[10][11]
During the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, he was in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, where he expressed his assessment of what was happening on his YouTube channel from a pro-Russian perspective.[15] This video was shown cropped on Channel One Russia without Lira's authorization, which led to him being expelled from the hotel in Kyiv where he was staying.[16][17] Gonzalo wanted to return to Kharkiv with his family, which he achieved after the incident. Lira has been critical of the government of Volodymyr Zelenskyy[18] and the oligarch Ihor Kolomoyskyi.[19][20][21][22]
On 17 April 2022, George Galloway, former British MP, announced on his television program "The Mother of All Talk Shows" that an interview with Gonzalo Lira scheduled for that edition could not be carried out due to his alleged disappearance in Ukraine. Friends and relatives of Lira confirmed that they had lost contact with him since 15 April, a disappearance confirmed by the Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs.[23][24][2][6]
Ukrainian neo-Nazi Sergei "Botsman" Korotkikh, in his later deleted tweet, announced that Lira had been kidnapped, tortured and killed.[25]
According to media accounts, Lira's phone was still accepting messages after his disappearance, but there was no reply.[10]
