Warning for drivers using Autopilot after Melbourne crash that critically injured woman

Driving experts have warned of the dangers of autonomous cars after an alleged hit-run driver claimed her Tesla was on Autopilot when it struck a young nurse in Melbourne.
The incident is the first crash Victoria Police's Major Collision Investigators have seen involving a Tesla or autonomous driving features.
Sakshi Agrawal, 23, was driving a Tesla Model 3 when she allegedly drove through Armadale at 6.30am yesterday and hit a 26-year old nurse crossing a road to board a tram.
Police have said the driver has claimed her car did not stop with the tram because it was on Autopilot.
Drive.com.au's James Ward has warned drivers cannot rely on Autopilot function.
"They are there as an assistance tool, not to replace you as the driver."
He said the function could measure the distance between the driver's car and the car in front, and that it had autonomous emergency braking for some scenarios.
"It does not know the difference between a stopping tram and another large vehicle on the road."
Ms Agrawal was driving a Tesla.
Sakshi Agrawal allegedly told detectives she thought she had more time to stop when her car struck the woman, critically injuring her.
Police have claimed when Ms Agrawol returned to the scene two hours later, she admitted she was not in control of the vehicle.
Ms Agrawal was granted bail yesterday and is due to return to court in June,
In the meantime, police will collect the onboard data from the Tesla.
The company did not respond to requests for comment. |
