Started looking for a new job this week, just want to write something so that in future, when I look back, the feelings and experience can be recalled.
Normally, there would be three instances where you would be looking for a job.
One, you lost the job or you just started your working life after formal education.
The first job is always difficult to find. This is from my personal experience and should be the case for most of us, unless you are well connected or your have someone who is running a a small business in your family.
Then, in the case of the loss of the job, you are likely to be depressed and pressured to quickly find a job, as you would have a family to feed and bills to pay. Fortunately, I have never been in this situation.
Two, you desperately want to leave your current position.
I had been in this situation twice.
One was actually my very first full-time job, where I was 3 years senior than the Indian co-worker and not only he was getting paid more than I was, but also he constantly criticized me, even though I had more qualifications and was in a good relationship with my principle.
In the end, I just could not take it anymore and had to leave.
The other one was due to the constant pressure from the boss. He pretty much managed and oversaw everything and nothing was ever good enough for him.
As a result, the more I feared that I would make a mistake, the more mistakes I actually made.
Three, you are alright with the current job, but you don’t mind leaving if there is a better one offered to you. This is probably the reason I am currently looking and I would say this would be the most ideal situation to be in.
This is because you are not under any pressure and most likely the job on offer would be a much better one.
The change is always difficult, as you have to learn new things – the people, the culture, the clients, but as the saying goes, frequent shifts make a tree dying but a man prospering.
Good luck to myself in finding a new job and starting a new life in a new city.
