Dear ,
Holiday season and travel go hand in hand, and having diabetes doesn't mean travelling can't be fun. With good planning, your trip can be hassle-free whether you're going interstate or overseas.
Our top tips for travelling well with diabetes:
Ensure you are prepared for delays or misplaced baggage. Carry medications, equipment and lollies in your hand luggage, and always pack more than you think you'll need.
Flights can be dehydrating. Make sure you drink plenty of water during the flight, and use a lubricating eye drop to avoid dry eyes.
Take opportunities to move around as often as you can on long trips. This will help control your blood glucose levels as well as assisting circulation in your legs and feet.1
Some people with diabetes are more likely to experience incontinence.2 Be prepared for extended periods without access to toilet facilities and ensure your comfort with appropriate incontinence products.
Tell your pharmacist that you're travelling. They can help ensure you have enough medication for your trip, prepare medication lists and provide advice so your supplies meet airline cabin requirements.
