Hopefully my contribution as a passtime angler helps.
There are lots of factors affecting decisions to acquire a boat, and I usually classified as direct and indirect factors.
In terms of direct factors one would consider his capital, mooring and/or storage and/or launching site, transport vehicle if towing, purpose of the boat, boating area/condition, knowledge of handling such boat, service & repair & maintenance, etc.
As for indirect concerns there are the residual/resale value, finance if any, support from friends/mates to launch/retrieve/wash boat or sharing expenses, steams to obtain appropriate advice and cheaper maintenance and parts, etc.
Most of the time as a passtime angler one would use the boat on weekends, depending on situation such as weather and season, availability from family commitments. Unless you are an avid angler who has no income restrictions and flexible schedule all the time.
There are pros and cons of owing big and small boats. Knowingly bigger boats give you comfort space and stability, luxury to travel further as offshore, however you must also taking into consideration such as fuel consumption, complexity of larger outboards as parts and servicing are not popular compare to smaller engine, limited launching facilities as in the state of Victoria where I live, etc.
Smaller boats allow you easy handling and offer plenty of launcing options, in additions to lesser maintainance costs and effort. Of course comfort and luxury is not comparable to larger boats, also in terms of offshore and big game fishing.
Generally boaters must consider his effort to go fishing or cruising, and it should be a leisure experience and not burden nor frustration. Thus one can always hear grudges from past boaters: 2 days of happiness when one actually acquire a boat - the very first day when a person bought a boat, and next will be the day that person sold his boat.
It is personal preference for GPS and sounder unit/s. Split screen or split units too have advantage and disadvantage but, if possible, I prefer to have split units.
