King Charles the First the grand grandson of Queen Elizabeth, King of England and Kind of Scotland.
He is very unfortunate. He was born in the age of great industrial revolution. Bankers, merchants had appeared on the stage of social life. They flocked into House of Common, voiced their will and digging around for means to increase their influence.
King Charles did have his chances. He governed his kingdom without the Parliment for ten years. He had several very able servants, like Archbishop Laud and the Earl of Strafford. One was a capable religious leader, the other very devoted clergyman. Unfortunately all fell apart when the king’s policy lack of courage, determination and consistency.
The thing I do not understand is that such a sheepish king actually started the war with the Parliament, even after he lost two previous wars with Scotland. I had a feeling he was setup either by his Privy Council or another party, which likely to be France. If it was France, she executed her plan neat and smart. England was with war with Scotland, then England was in Civil war. Twelve years after they executed their king and declared Commonwealth, son of King Charles the First came back to England to take the throng.
