A man has been taken to hospital after his boat sank in Port Phillip Bay this morning.
Police received a call from a member of the public who advised they saw a boat hull 200m south of the Half Moon boat ramp in Black Rock just before 8am.
Local police patrolled the area however nothing was located.
At around 8.15am, police received a further call advising a man had washed up on shore around 500 metres south of the initial location.
The 78-year-old man was taken to The Alfred hospital for treatment for hypothermia.
It is believed the Doveton man had been fishing in the 4.9 metre tinny.
Police will investigate if the man was wearing a Personal Floatation Device.
Water Police Sergeant Ed Formosa said the man was lucky to have survived in this mornings weather conditions.
“It’s important people remember it’s their responsibility to check weather conditions prior to heading out, particularly if they are solo,” he said.
“With the summer months approaching, we are urging all boat users to ensure the seaworthiness of their vessel, its size and their skill-set are appropriate for all conditions,” he said.
