Fishing bans to be considered at Doncaster's Ruffey Park Lake after native bird dies after swallowing hook
Clancys Lane resident Andrew Wallis said he found the bird, an Australasian Coot, at the end of a fishing line left on the lake's southeastern bank on February 10. Mr Wallis - an experienced anti-duck shooting activist - said the bird would have "suffered severe pain and a slow death" as it had ingested the hook.
He said people had been fishing in the same area - fenced and signed as a bird sanctuary - since he moved nearby about two years ago.
"It needs 'no fishing' signs in the areas where the birds nest and feed," Mr Wallis said.
"You can't abolish (fishing) as people like to come down with their families, but people should do it on open banks, where it is more appropriate."
Manningham Council chief executive Joe Carbone said there had been two recent complaints concerning fishing at the lake.
He said the park's advisory committee - which in June last year decided fishing should be allowed but not promoted - would again consider the issue this week.
"The range of options may include banning fishing or educational signs regarding good fishing practice and the impact on wildlife," Mr Carbone said.
