My dear son, I wrote this memo for you because of the following reasons:
- No one knows what might happen tomorrow, nor how long one can live. It's better to learn certain things earlier rather than later.
- I am your father. If I don't tell you these, no one will tell you.
- These memo were based on my life experience. As I learnt it the hard way, I hope these memo saves you a lot of heartbreaks.
The followings are things you need to remember as you go through life:
1) Those who mistreated you, don't hold grudges against them
No one in your life has to treat you well, except me and your mum. For those who are nice to you, apart from being grateful, please also be mindful. People do things for reasons. Someone is nice to you does not mean that they really like you. Do be careful before you take them in as your friend.
2) No one is irreplaceable. There is no such thing called "must have".
Once you understand these, if those close to you leave you, or you lost what is most precious to you, these are really no big deal.
3) Life is short.
While today you are wasting your life away, tomorrow you will find that life has already slipped from you.
So the earlier you learn to treasure life, the more time you have to enjoy it. Instead of wishing for longevity, it's better to learn to enjoy what life can offer you early.
4) There is no such thing called "love of your life".
Love is only a fleeting feeling, which changes with time, changes with your mood. If one day, your so called love of your life left you, please wait patiently, as time heals all wounds. Don't over emphasize the beauty of romance, nor the pain from losing a loved one.
5) There are many successful people who are not well educated. However, it does not mean that you can be successful if you don't study hard. Whatever you learnt becomes your weapon. Remember: you can build an empire even if you are penniless, but you still need the tools.
6) I don't expect you to look after me when I grow old. At the same time, don't expect me to look after you once you grow up. When you can stand on your own two feet, I have completed my duty as your father. It is up to you whether you want to ride a bus or a Benz, have noodle or shark fin, it's your responsibility.
7) You can require yourself to keep your promise, but you can't expect the same from the others.
You can require yourself to treat others well, but you can't expect the same from the others.
Life is not meant to be reciprocal: your life is going to be miserable if you don't understand this.
8) Many have been buying lottery for decdes, still stayed poor, and had never even won the 3rd price.
This is normal, and it just proves that only working hard will make you wealthy. There is no such thing called free lunch.
9) Blood ties us together only once. I don't know how much time we have together, but please treasure it. Whether we love each other, we won't meet again next life.
