Have we become Australianised?

I read the news only a couple of days ago – that our Prime Minister, JuliaGillard, was “attacked” by having a sandwich thrown at her while she visited a primary school in the ACT. This was the second time Ms Gillard had such an
incident; the first time occurred in a state high school in QLD.

I don’t want to comment further on this incident, but what I do want to do is comment on the feedback from some of the Chinese community forum. One enthusiastic member opened a voting on this topic, to receive people’s opinions about this incident.

Our Prime Minister obviously doesn’t have a good reputation within this forum, but what interested me the most were the opinions about the student's behaviour of “hurling things at people”. Within the poll, 75% of the users agreed with the student’s behaviour and had said that “the Prime Minister deserved it”, however only 5% of users disagreed and stated that “students should show more respect for the Prime Minister”. One of the members even said that if his son as did it, then he would’ve rewarded him.

The parents in this forum have now learned what a democracy is, for sure. We’ve learned how to bravely express ourselves by all means. If I don't like someone, easy, throw stuff at them, and the consequence – parents will reward me.

What kind of hatred is that? Now I understand why there are so many adults that are afraid of our teenagers. If you dare to block my way, well, you will be attacked with a sandwich, stick, knife or even a bomb.

Our parents don’t need to worry anymore about whether or not our kids will become Australianised. YOU’re already thinking too main stream for that.

YOU needn’t do the right thing, YOU needn’t do it in the right way, YOU only need do whatever YOU think is right, and then your kids will be one of them for sure.

Good Manners? Appropriate Behaviour? Nobody cares.

Voluntary contribution

It has always been a hot topic within the forum: voluntary contributions (such as P&C contributions) in public school systems.

Let’s have a look at some data in NSW. There are 2000 public schools in NSW. The total amount of voluntary contribution is approximately $55 million per year; the average is $20,000 per school. Let’s also say the pupils within the school totalled to 500 students, then the contribution per parent would be around $50. That’s not a lot. This figure indicates that most people do not contribute. Even if they are well off with money. OR "irrespective of whether they are rich or poor".

Mosman High School is located in a prestigious suburb and is quite famous throughout NSW as it is the only school without a school uniform. Their HSC performance isn’t bad either. In this school, only 30% of parents made a contribution. Surprised? Why are the parents so “cheap” in such rich area? And by the looks of things, it is worse in senior grades with only 10% of the
parents in Year 12 willing to give money, whilst 60% of the junior parents all made contributions. Why? I think it’s because of the term “voluntary”.

I don’t believe people in this forum are too poor to afford this contribution. The argument always focuses on the word "voluntary". One side blames the other for not supporting the public school system; the other side argues that they shouldn’t be judged morally for that. Is there any conclusion? Of course not. In fact, overall, parents with a Chinese background have done well in this contribution, as the top 10 schools for voluntary contributions are made up of selective schools and other schools with higher percentages of students with Chinese backgrounds. The average contribution to schools by parents is between $150,000 - $250,000 per school per year, whilst the highest score goes to Sydney Boys High with over $1 million per year.

Therefore, it is a good sign that this topic is being raised in this Chinese forum. We will learn about the facts and truths to make informed decisions based on them.

School Community

Sydney Boys High School has recently called on the Department of Education to relax the entry requirements for local students living nearby. Many parents feel concerned about this news and a school representative said that the community’s support for school activities has been weakened because of the fact that the students are not from local areas (the students come from 150 different post code areas). The school is considering that the change willn attract more local students who will participate more actively in school activities. Asian parents are not convinced by those reasons and relate it to racism and social class division.

For our generation in China, when we were of school age, a school was just a school. Parents simply sent us to school and left us at school to be looked after and educated properly. Parents didn't need to get involved with things like school management and other activities. Parents only needed to attend parent-teacher interviews, which happened only 1-2 times a year.

Therefore, we don’t understand the concept of a school "community”.

Australians have a strong sense of community and the school is not just the principal’s or a teacher’s school, it is OUR school; however here is a question: if parents do everything, then what’s left for the principal and teachers? Well, I don’t have an answer to this question.

I’d rather define this as "Culture Shock", instead of racism and social class discrimination.

Mysterious Organization - P&C

As mentioned above, there is a "culture shock" when we consider our schools. But if we consider our schools with an open mind, the "shock" won’t be that serious.

In all public schools, there is an organization called the P&C – the Parents & Citizens Association. We don’t have such an organization within the school system in China. It reinforces that “community” is a very important concept in Australia. Chinese parents might not usually attend regular P&C meetings, and therefore we might see it as a mysterious organization. It is not an
organization designed to bully our new migrants as has been suggested by some readers of this forum. The P&C organizations’ goal is to serve the school and its students. I consider the P&C as a friend rather than an enemy. It has significant powers that may affect the school policy making.

P&C members are all school parents and most of them have full time jobs, yet they still invest much of their spare time in this work. I personally am not a member, but I have attended the regular meetings often enough to know that their workload is huge. People might think it’s hard to get into the P&C and that this organization is only for a small group of people who possess the power to control the school. That’s not correct. If you attend a few P&C meetings, you’ll immediately change your mind. It is a big commitment for any member, so not many parents will fight to get into it as not many people are willing to do the work for free.

Therefore, I think that the members deserve our respect. If we want to have our say, we can just step forward and express ourselves. We should participate, rather than hide behind our computers and complain or feel intimidated by the system.

If we are going to fit in as Australians, we need to look at western culture as a whole, not just respond to one incident, and applaud a sandwichattack. (which may not really be a part of western culture...)

OR

we have to intake a more comprehensive approach to western culture. We need to become involved and not just applaud sandwich attacks because wethink this is a "good" visible way to protest.
